zoetig, beetje bitter, koffie, mout, houttint.
HET MONDGEVOEL:
Volle body, beetje bitterdroog, licht romige textuur, medium prikkelend koolzuurgas.

Dark brown/almost black, colour, beige foam. Roasty, some coffee, sweet syrupy also, bitter hoppy finish. Interesting brew.

The first marketed beer by a self-proclaimed nanobrewery in Kalken (a village about nine miles east of Ghent), basically a kind of quadrupel flavoured with linden blossom and referring, in the name and in the character depicted on the front label, to a villain from a popular Flemish comic book series – I can only assume that this Schrikduif brewer has obtained permission of the heirs of the author of this comic book series to use this character’s name… The (still very small) commercial quantities found on the market today are brewed at BeerSelect, though this is not mentioned on the label; since the brewer is currently working on his own brewery with the intent of producing as much as possible of it himself, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and created Schrikduif as a separate brewery entry, even if I would normally just put ‘Schrikduif Anatole’ directly under BeerSelect (the admins can feel free to do so if they judge otherwise). Interestingly, ‘schrikduif’ is a valid Dutch word, meaning literally the opposite of ‘lokduif’ (decoy): it is a fake dead pigeon installed by pigeon fanciers in places where they do not want their pigeons to land – in other words, a somewhat macabre way of scaring off real pigeons… Anyway, on to the beer, coincidentally encountered in the ENTR restaurant in the Ham, an old and long street in Ghent connecting Portus Ganda with the inner ring road. Very thick, foamy and pillowy, pale yellowish-beige, dense head, slowly dissipating over a very dark chestnut brown beer – almost blackish – with burgundy glow. Aroma of brown walnut and Pumpernickel bread, caramel, dark candi sugar, dried prunes, hazelnut grounds, ruby port, chocolate crisp cookies, candied fig, dusty dried herbarium plants and dried cut flowers – the linden blossom no doubt, young ‘jenever’, raisins. Sweet onset, candi-sugary, prune jam, fig compote and old raisins, touch banana, sharp carbonation for style but this is made up for by a very full and very rounded, almost syrupy mouthfeel, the rotundity strongly enhanced by the oats. Nut bread, caramel and a light dosage of bitterish toast in the middle with a chocolatey edge, developing a clear dried flower or herb aspect from the linden blossom without becoming all tea-like; soft floral hops, lingering toasty malt accents and a glow of ‘jenever’-like, but generally well hidden alcohol provide some bitterness, but the sweetness does remain a key factor even in the finish. Very indulgent, a liquid ‘koffiekoek’ style quad, perhaps a tad too sweet, but at the same time very well structured for a first commercial brew too – better than average for what comes from BeerSelect, I dare add. If this is the quality standard this Schrikduif microbrewer is aiming at, then I cannot wait to taste his second beer (already in preparation). Much better than expected – so quite pleasantly surprised, in all.
