Bottle from Systembolaget, vintage 2008. Dark copper with a small beige head. Sweet aroma and taste, dried fruit, malt, some alcohol, raisin, vanilla, wood and with light earthy notes. Quite complex and with a full body. Good beer.

60 cl bottle @ home. Vintage 2006, BBE 25.10.2012. 12% on the bottle
Tasted in vertical with Vintage 2005, both got 4.0 but this was slightly better
Dark cherry tree colour with small, quickly disappearing head (2005 had almost none). Not murky like 2005. Aroma is sweet and it has ripe fruits, cherry tree (or oak?) and some sugar. Flavour is rather woody with oak, sugar, ripe fruits and some warming alcohol. Malty. Somewhat unpleasant alcohol in aftertaste. Oak dominates in the taste. Palate has some CO2 (2005 had almost none), but it is still very smooth. Very good BW, although the alcohol comes a bit too much through on some sips.

2008 bottle bought @ Systembolaget and consumed on September 28. Pours chestnut brown with a fizzy mocha head that quickly dissipates. Smell is sweet and malty with lots of alcohol. There’s raisins with hints of rum. Taste is very sweet with caramel, dried fruits and alcohol. Aftertaste is rather bitter and dry. Very intense and feels more like a spirit than a beer. Served this with chèvre which worked out very well.

Draft @ Copenhagen Beer Festival 2011. 2005 vintage. Pours a hazy amber orange color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty dark fruit and caramel aroma with some earthy notes. Sweetish malty dark fruit and acaramel flavor with bitter hoppy hints. Has a dry malty dark fruit and caramel finish.

An expensive 600ml bottle found at the LCBO, but being barleywine, understandable. Pours a dark brown colour with ruby highlights. The head is light brown, fizzy, and does not stay long like most higher alcohol beers. Nice molasses aromas with dark fruits, like plums, prunes and also notes of nuts. Full-bodied wet mouthfeel with no burning at all. Interesting flavours with caramel, dark fruits, hints of coffee, nuts and light vanilla. At the last pour, the brew got murky looking like swamp water (or chocolate milk) and some mild chocolate came out of it. Quite a good barleywine and like most, harder to drink at first, but gets much easier as you go. And I could take more of this.

A very nice barley wine. Strong taste with a hint of nut flavour. The strong alcohol level adds nicely to the experience. But as long as one 0.6 litre bottle costs 20,60 EUR at Alko, this will be my last bottle.

2008 bottle:
Pours a brown colour with a very small head. Toffee, caramel, marshmallows and oak barrels on the nose. Flavour is caramel, toffee, raisins, mint, salty licorice and some booze. Pretty good, but it came in a way too big bottle; 60 cl.
