Cask at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. It pours a clear dark ruby body under an off-white to beige head of typical cask-size, that is, just a layer of bubbles. Burnt nose with cocoa and dried fruits. Coffee too. Expected more chocolate than I got. The flavor has more chocolate though, and there’s also some burnt malt, a slight touch of charcoal and a coffee-like bitterness towards the end. Roasted malt as well in the finish. Medium body, surprisingly dry. A pleasant beer, but I would like it fuller. (080912)

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.] Pitch black with a tawny hue and a thin tan head that laces the glass well. Malted milk aroma; caramel and milky coffee flavours to start; smooth and silky in the mouth; then developing contrasting bitter and sweet chocolate flavours towards the end. An excellent example of what a stout should be; a world away from spuer-chilled nitro-keg mass-produced alternatives.
