It’s Alive! is Mikkellers answer and tribute to the trappist beer Orval. It’s Alive is an easy-to-drink beer, with a lot of hops. The color is amber, the foam is high, white and dense. The potent Brettanomyces culture makes It’s Alive continue to develop in the bottle.

Lemon meringue and lemon juice nose with a vinegar component, overall rather nice. Clear auburn, thick pillowy lacing yellow head. Hoppy flavor of whole orange and lemongrass. Funk notes are there, but I was expecting a flemish sour not a BPA. Children’s chewable orange flavored aspirin finish, subtle. Alcohol is well concealed, body is medium. Could be a BPA or BIPA, I suggest the latter for classification.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bar on October 15. Pours clear golden brown with a small white head. Smell is subtle but fresh with a slight acidity and some grapefruit. Taste is dry and bitter with grapefruit, hay, funk and fruit-taffy. finish is nice and bitter. It doesn’t live up to an Orval but it’s still an ok beer.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Disappointing, had high expectations of this beer. Found to have a very average smell and taste and a watery texture. Decent amber color, white head.

Tap. Cloudy glowing amber with a lasting white head. Aroma is bubblegum fruity with just a hint of tangy funk, some hard spices and flowers. Slightly slippery mouthfeel. Tastes much like it smells, with some berries too. Finish is not quite dry. Alcohol quite hidden. Presumably in the bottle that slight funkiness becomes much more prominent, but fresh on tap it’s pleasant and fruity with a nice hint of intrigue.

750mL bottle, split with manuchampions and Matts_Property, pours hazy golden with a big off-white head. Aroma of big funk, lots of brett / yeast and slightly tangy tropical fruits. Flavour is very funky with tons of brett, slight tang / sour fruits, with a cider-like feel, tons of carbonation and a dry finish. Very solid.

Bottle from Alko Arkadia. Originally rated on 28.5.2010. Okay Belgian styled dark ale. A bit unbalanced.

Draft taster, Bavarian Lodge. The draft poured an IPA-colored copper body under a thin head. It showed a light malty smell with some nice Belgian fruity esters. The taste gives me an impression of strawberry-kiwi juice; slightly tart, over a Belgian pils type malt. That’s actually different from my last Orval, which I thought was more dry. After the first few sips, I found the funk of a fine Belgian ale fermented with a touch of, perhaps, brettanomyces yeast. Most beer geeks want to cellar their Orvals or Duvels, but It’s Alive!, probably named for having a dose of yeast in the container, was quite tasty served fresh.
