Pile (the band) has an elegant weirdness tainted in black. For their concert at the brewpub, we took inspiration from the Expresso Martini cocktail. A Stout with coffee added 3 times: expresso, home-made coffee liqueur and whole beans. Pure coffee goodness.

Tap at the brewpub shared with Gabor and Gabor. Arom is full-on coffee with additional notes of coffee. Taste is coffee, with an underlying coffee character. Thick bodied, especially for the ABV. It might seem like it but doesn’t feel one dimensional or boring at all, great stuff.

Coffee stout from what I tend to consider the best ‘postmodern’ U.S. (or global) style brewery in Brussels – so ignoring Cantillon’s lambic and Senne’s more traditional output. Thanks Meeki for sharing the can. Open, thin, pale greyish beige ring with ‘flat islands’ of foam on top of a blackish, but actually very dark chestnut brown beer with copper red glow. Aroma of pecan nuts, fudge, vanilla (oak), raw green beans rather than highly aromatic coffee, coffee grounds at most, bayleaf, whisky, hints of coconut and varnish. Sweet (yet non-sticky) onset with a light umami accent (black olive), softish in carbonation, full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel; caramelly and pecan-nutty malt core with dark-chocolatey edge, the bitter side of which is accentuated by the coffee, which lingers at the back, along with spicy and herbal accents and a whisky-ish alcohol glow (which should perhaps not be this obvious at this strength). Decent, smooth, easily drinkable stout, but the coffee could have been more aromatic for me – solid but not excellent, compared with many other Source beers.

6/V/23 - 33cl can from La Source (webshop), shared @ home, BB: 28/II/24 (2023-411)
Clear dark brown beer, small fizzy aery irregular beige head, dissipates immediately. Aroma: that’s a lot of coffee all right, chocolate notes, more dark roasted coffee, charcoal, dirty impression. MF: soft to no carbon, medium body. Taste: that’s more coffee all right, a bit sweet, caramel touch, some vanilla even, but mainly just all coffee. Aftertaste: all coffee, way too much, no balance, slightly sourish, meh. Just a can of iced coffee to me.

33cl can, BB 28/02/2024, batch # P638.
