Bottle – Purchase in 2003 and drank in 2004. Poured a blond brew with a huge white head with above standard retention. Nose is subtle alcohol with some malt, a bit like a mix of barley and wheat. Medium carbonation with an above average body. Taste is bit too strong on alcohol for my liking but I guess it is to be expected for those special anniversary beers. The mix of spice is great with also some fruit (apple?) and a bit of sweetness underneath it all. Overall, this is a great beer and I’ll try to get my hands on some leftover and see what it could once it is aged a bit more.

Hazy deep blond color, poor head retention. Good aroma, malty and with some honey. The body strength and the carbonation are very good, even after so many years; dry malt flavor, evident alcohol warmth, correct bitterness. Interesting and pleasant; it kept up very well with the age.

2003-07-31, corked bottle, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Hazy blond color, big head. Tripel aroma, malty, dry, spicy, oranges. The flavor improves while oxydizing; round, malty, some fruitness, well balanced (sweetness and bitterness; low alcohol perception). Another good one by Unibroue, but just slightly different from the others.

Golden-orange. White head, stable and going down lacey. Dry-candi sugary nose, and a strange, sweaty smell (I hope that's not me!). Taste: Duvel-remake - or Hapkin as it is sweeter (candi-sugar) and a more peppery finish. It's not better, not worse. And it isn't my cuppa tea. Dry effect outspoken. Some alcohol detectable. 'Nuff said.

I was disappointed by the first few sips, but 11 opened up nicely as it warmed. Pours a straw/orange color, with a tangy, vinous, almost wheaty aroma. Notes of spices and fruits. Flavor is a nice blend of Belgian candi sugar, grapes, cider, light fruits, and spice. Alcohol content is well-hidden but warming. A beer that requires more than a shot sample, furthering my suspicion that sample sizes must be of sufficient size to render an appropriate rating.

Sampled at From The Vine monthly beer tasting Aug 4th, 2003: Pours a cloudy blonde/gold color with a thin white head. Thin and quick lacing and very effervescent. The aroma is very wheaty with a bit of citrus and malt too. Slick body with lots of alcohol up front, with intermittent fruity and malty flavors making themselves known. The finish is very fruity and sweet. An interesting Canadian Belgian but really nothing to write home about.

Bottle #2:
Slightly cloudy golden colour with a thin white head. Smells of corn, yeast, wheat and a bit of spice. Strong spicey flavour with a strong yeastie/wheatiness. Overall, a decent beer, and a bit better than before-so I thought! Rating for this sample: 8,3,7,3,13. I sampled this beer at Joey_Capps' on 13-September-2003 in Hamilton, Ontario.

Bottle #1:
The first time I saw this beer, I bought it. I got to share this bottle (750 mL) with two others, so the whole bottle wasn't mine. The colour was a pale hazy yellow with a definate white head. The aroma was filled with coriander and some other herb/vegetable scents. The taste was fairly similar to the smell and once again very strong. The Wheatie characteristics were very noticable, and the beer was a bit odd tasting. I don't know why I didn't care for the beer as much as others, maybe because it was so malty or because of its strong coriander flavour, but otherwise it was an acceptable beer. This wasn't my favourite beer for the style, and in the Belgian Strong Ale category, there are some definate big differences. I bought this in the large bottle size at Dean & Deluca in Washington, D.C. Rating for this sample: 8,4,6,3,14

Wow, this is much better than unibroue 10. Cloudy golden with a lasty, frothy, white head - the aroma is an inviting mix of sweet citrus fruits, spices and yeast/bread - the flavor has a perfectly mild sweetness, with apricots being the main fruit flavor in the mix - there are a lot of tripel-ish qualities to this, but this sets itself apart as a unique experience with its enjoyable sweet fruitiness, it's slight spice/peppery qualities, and its lingering, bready taste that it leaves on the tongue - the alcohol comes out a bit in the finish, but it isn't overpowering, and it certainly doesn't take away from this beer's enjoyability - a quality offering from unibroue.

Bottled. Pale orange and cloudy. Fruity nose (apricot and oranges). Lively and peppery with lively mouthfeel. Dryish and vinous, both pleasant and complex. Unibroue has so many blond beers it's getting hard to distinguish them, but this one is excellent regardless.

Cloudy golden yellow and foamy. Rich sweetish bready aroma and flavor, dry finish with strong alcohol presence. Still a very good beer, but 1) doesn't live up to the hype, 2) doesn't match the complexity of the best tripels and 3) doesn't have the subtetly of alcohol of the best tripels.

Aged 5 years. Hazy amber with a hint of calvados. Lean, but with a hoppy/perfumey/yeasty character. Well-rounded. This has held up very well, even gained a bit in terms of balance. Ar 8 Ap 3 F 8 P 5 O 17 = 4.1

Original rating (Jan 24, 2003): Cloudy yellow. Creamy, peachy, peppery. Strong alcohol and yeast presence. Dry herbal hops. Very complex - my vocabulary fails me but I’m not worried - I will be re-sampling this one! Ar 7 Ap 4 F 9 P 4 O 17 = 4.1
