Notes from April 2009 Year-old bottle. Stored in the fridge six month ago. Avoided for what seems like forever. Though I do like the look of stubby bottles. Ommegang Anniversary glass at the ready, a forceful snap of the bottle soon follows with carbonation creeping up towards the lip. A frantic pour results in twice as much sandy-colored foam as beer. Spotty lace. A dirty brown, with tons of sediment, It looks like gritty stove top coffee. Initial whiff is strong with hard water. Keeping at it, I get flour, crystal malt, fruity Belgian yeast, & just barely a bit of roast. Powdery sweet banana/coconut artificially flavored dip candy & lots of scotch-like tannins are what my first impressions get me. Minor outline of roast, a continued sickly taste of vanillin, & a heavy dose of alcohol. The finish is metallic, along with a bit of bitter grass. Taste more like a imperial bruin with additives the anything stoutly. Carbonation is strong, the body is expectedly thin, & the flavors headache inducing. Weird, though just questionably terrible. I'm almost certain the same people that love Southern Tier's phoney Creme Brulee would love the synthetic similarities.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Unbelievable gusher, but there was a tag to warn me. Even so, wasn't well enough prepared. Dark chocolate brown with massive golden bubbly head that diminishes fairly quickly apart from when pouring! Aroma is chocolate, boozy sharpness, creamy sweetness, classic alvinne aroma. Not that different from Morpheus dark as far as I can remember but maybe a bit drier and with some bitterness. Taste is nice. Chocolate, bit of mars bar. Initial boozy hit of sweetness. Finish is dry and a touch bitter, dark chocolate. Very full on. Ap 34 ar 9 t 9 p 34 o 16

Roasty, sugary aroma with molasses and pear. No laing, hardly any carbon, as if the beer hasn’t refermented in the bottle. Raisin. licorice, coffee, mango, red berries. Warming alcohol. A beer that is very complex and makes a lot a promises, but doesn’t deliver as it should be. Still a nice beer.

Bottle bought at the Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Poured very dark brown with a small tan coloured head. Aroma of dark fruits, chocolate, berries, malt and a hint of vanilla. Towards heavy sweetness, moderate bitterness. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation.

This is my 5,000th rate and something a bit special. On 6th Feb 2015 I was at a Belgian Beer Board website bottle exchange evening at De Bierboom (Brugge). Sat next to me was Podge, co-brewer of this beer. We have met at various Belgian locations over the years and even in Germany once, but never in the UK where we both live. Anyway he brings out three 33cl bottles of unlabelled prototypes of this beer, just with 1,2 and 3 stuck on them. Each bottle was this beer but with different hop profiles. Podge could not remember which hops were used in which bottle (1,2 or 3) and not even which prototype was eventually chosen for production. All I can say is they all tasted great, as Podge, myself and a friend called Tony tried to pick the best one of the three: we couldn’t agree and just enjoyed the moment while all around us bottles were being passed around as we sipped and appreciated Podge’s Imperial Stouts.
