Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

500ml bottle from Alko. Pretty certain I have had this couple of times before, but no rating, so here goes. Poured mahogany color. Dark malty with chocolate, spiciness, toast and burnt caramel. Dry finish. Much better than I remembered really.

$5.79 500ml bottle, WW. Dark brown with a centimeter of off-white head. Nose is candied cherry, caramel, light chocolate. Flavor is distinguishingly English. Very light roast, hints of caramel, black cherry, light spice, hints of chocolate, raisin. Simple, totally drinkable, again, very English.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. ABV noted on the bottle at 7.5%. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with simple dark malt notes, light milk chocolate, soft ashy roast, dark fruits, raisins, low bitterness. Surprisingly light in body with fine, massaging carbonation. Sweet finish, some earth, roast, cocoa. Simple, drinkable stuff.
