Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year.

Bottle from HOTM @ 7.5%. Pours near black with small fizzy beige head, some retention. Aroma of roasted malts, sweetness, damp cardboard, faint coffee and berry notes. Taste is chocolatey and sweet with roast and coffee notes part balancing, light fruitiness and quite an ashy and meaty finish with a moderate bitterness. Body is slick although a little on the light side for 7.5%. Very drinkable although doesn't stand out amongst other strong stouts.

Aromas are dark malt, roast, cocoa and a bit of molasses. Flavors are somewhat similar to nose, add in a little fruit and body is a little thin. A bit toasty in the finish and it's really pretty good. If the body was fuller it would be so much better.

Better than expected, which is glowing praise for these Ridgeway Christmas beers. Bitter chocolate and dark fruit notes lead to a thin but sufficiently roasted back end. Drinking the second half of the bottle out of a glass previously filled with an Old Fashioned greatly improved the experience.
