Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Batch 2 bottle at the beer bistro.
Great aroma of sweet bready caramel malts, brown sugar, candi sugar, prunes, figs, apples, peaches, and even some hints of spices like clove, and cinnamon. This is one of the most complex aromas i have ever had the pleasure to smell. The flavor was just crazy. So much came through, loads of sweet malts, more fruit, but especialy the figs, and plums. The finish was a bit dry, and the alcohol showed up in the end. What a great sipping beer.

Notes from May 2009 Growler filled at Whole Foods. Golden Carolus goblet. Served a little extra cold to account for the time it takes for me to migrate from the computer to the couch. The beer is in a little bit of a dream state. A chill hazed dull amber & a sharp alcoholic tone rising off it. It sits & sweats... Topping off the first pour, a thin, unagitated layer of eggshell white-colored foam laces up the rim of the glass very uniformly with sticky residual sugars. Subsequent pours grow, but never reach above half an inch. Smells of cooked bananas, sugar cookies, light coriander, & a touch of lemon. Burnt caramel takes over at the end, riding on some now, less brazen(but still very potent) alcohol. Taste is a lot like a stiff bock to me(bready yeast, stingy clove, some noticeable heft, big alcohol). Maybe a touch nutty. Bananas, over-ripened or otherwise, seem absent though. Body is a bit lighter too. It's missing that sickly sweet malt as well. Okay, not a bock. :P Residuals are big though. Amazingly easier to swallow then a solvent fire or gooey mess of malt. Candied sugar works miracles. The beer never feels sticky or saturated. Bitterness is mellow, but soothing(hint of zest), numbing things out a little. Carbonation is low, but tight. Finish is cracker-y amid all that alcohol. Decent beer, but I'd leave blending to more sure things... like Shirley Temples. :P

Bottled jan 07. Dark brown color. Malt, dark chocolate, plums and porto in the aroma. Full bodied, malty flavor with strong notes of porto, plums, pineapple, caramel and chocolate. Good mix of a strong abbey ale and a doppelbock, very well balanced.

Draft. A- Roasted poblano peppers, spices, burnt caramel. A- Red amber color, hazy liquid, tan head. T- Chili peppers, spices. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, peppery finish. O- Not sure what is wrong with me but I can’t get over there being a basket of different peppers in this beer. It was all I could detect. Interesting for sure.

Bottle. 2007 vintage. Hazy deep amber liquid with small to medium off-white head. Aroma of raw sugar, raisins, toffee, port wine, light sweet alcohol and light oak. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of raw sugar, toffee, raisins and toast. Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Really good, has aged well.

Bomber from Batch #7. Brewing in February 2014. Complex, rich malt of barley field. Sweet grain and faint dark fruit. Slight alcohol nose perceptible. Pours a hazy, copper with bright white head. Head leaves slight webbing and collars -- collar is spectacularly full. Trub from pour present as small particulates. Taste is rich, sweet malt. Moderate floral and earth hops. Viscous, silky mouthcovering envelopes the tongue. Finishes very sweet and slightly bitter.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/31/2014. Pours fairly cloudy deep orange copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of pear, apple, golden raisin, banana, clove, caramel, brown sugar, toast, biscuit, pepper, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of pear, apple, golden raisin, banana, clove, caramel, brown sugar, toast, biscuit, pepper, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of pear, apple, golden raisin, banana, clove, caramel, brown sugar, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian strong dark ale. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
