Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Bottle courtesy of Demcorhip: Poured a cloudy deep copper color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention. Aroma of sweet malt and medium funky yeast is pretty interesting. Taste of sweet malt is mix with some subtle sour notes and some light funky yeast. Body is quite full with some adequate carbonation and no alcohol was discernable. Overall, this seems like a good concept but I still think I would prefer having my own bottle of RR salvation instead of this.

sampled at the Hampton tasting - Pours dark amber with a foamy head. Yeast, malt, and some darker fruits comprise the aroma. The flavor is sweet and fruity with that 9% abv pretty much buried. Medium bodied and lively, this is an enjoyable effort from Avery and Russian River.

Bottle: Golden amber pour with a creamy white head. Fruity, musty aroma with a bit of malt and sublte spices. The taste is more malty and sweet with fruits, prunes, and a lingering alcohol warming sensation. A different take on the style. Thanks to Indiana_Red for sharing.

Bottle Pours a slightly hazy chestnut color with a dense foamy sandy colored head. Thick sheeting lacing. Odd aroma that is not quite classic Belgian and a bit of dark fruits and apples. Flavor is very papery and woody. A little bitterness but sour grassy flavor. Chalky palate. Dissapointing.

Poured a translucent nut brown with a foamy white head. Smelled of pears, apples, slightly of yeast, flowers but mainly fruit. Flavor was very nice and balanced. Darker fruits come through, like plums, as well as heavy mixed grain. Finish, like many Belgians, is heavy on the yeast and a tad medicinal. This beer was great up to the finish, where it comes in a little TOO Belgian for my taste.

Sampled on draft at Zeno’s in State College PA this beer poured a ruby-chestnut color with a small khaki head. The aroma was strong, sweet, fruity and had a brown sugar element. The flavor was strong grapefruity hops with a toffee malt undertone and a long hoppy finish. The mouthfeel was on the thick side. Interesting.

Bottle shared with Enniskillen; Nose of caramel, dark fruit, bananas, cloves, yeastiness, and a background tiny bit of funkiness; hazy amber-brown with a medium glass-lacing beige head; flavor show an initial pepperiness, with caramel, spices, more bananas, and a little bitter- sour finish. Unusual combination of beers, but pleasant.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear dark copper colour, small creamy head. Strong almondy Belgian style yeast aroma. Medium sweet and solidly malty. There’s lots of caramell and almond with notes of coriander and grass as well as cherries. Full bodied with clean mouthfeel. Salty finish. A good beer, but perhaps in this case the concept is more interesting than the beer itself.

Good, whipped cream head, slightly irregular over hazy red beer. Good hops, ureum, alcohol, citrus (my wife complains about sprouts and turnips??!?). Sweet, alcoholic taste, with a slight sourish lining; hops give flavour but almost no bitterness. Quite some roastiness. Bit soupy, warming up. Very slick, but it ends a bit empty, strange as that may sound. A strange beer, and indeed, it seems to be pulling in two directions at once, rather than to form a blend.
