Czech Mates is a Czech Style Lager brewed in collaboration with the state-owned Budweiser Budvar Brewery in the Czech Republic. This is the first official collaboration with a brewery outside of their home country and we are incredibly proud to have this honour. The beer is brewed using the Budvar yeast strain and the Budvar decoction method of brewing, but uses English malt and hops for an English twist. Be prepared for this to be your summer go-to lager!

Draught at Lauter. Clear golden. Lots of diacetyl, butterscotch, dust, sweetish malt, buttery, a bit of minerals, light bitterness. Very unpleasant, flawed, disappointing.

Draught at Lauter, big long lasting bubbly head, clear and a touch deep gold colour, tropical fruits, hint of honey and a smokey whiff, light to medium herbal bitterness, some maltiness in the back, noticable sweetness but not too heavy. Really nice.

Tap at Kulový Blesk. Clear golden body, white head. Grainy malty aroma, bit herbal notes. Soft, sweetish taste, bit yolky, minerally, vaguely herbal, floral, citric. Very much Budvarish, guess they brought the yeast? Dunno, quite a decent lager, though a bit on the sweetish side, which I'm not an enormous fan of.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from the Lidl on Well Street. Pours clear burnished gold with a creamy, white head. Light-medium sweet flavour with notes of sun-kissed malts, a nip of caramel, touches of grass, hay, bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Decent balance to finish, but more lightly toasted pale malts, biscuits, straw, a hint of dough. Tasty, easy-drinking stuff.

Draft at Craftwerk, Southend. Poured a clear golden colour with a lasting creamy frothy white head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is malt and lager yeast. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a crisp, yeasty, sweet malt, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

On tap at The Rusty Bucket, Eltham. Dark golden pour with a white head. Fresh bread, dried herbs and light honey aromas. Similar approach in the flavour. Characteristically crisp. Lightly sweet hoppy finish.

Can from Raynville Superstore. It pours clear golden - yellow with a decent fluffy white head. The aroma is toasty grain, cereal, bready malt, grassy and a touch of pine. The taste is crispy, dry, snappy, some bitterness, bitter - sweet character, toasty grains, cereal, nuttiness, bready malt, biscuit, grassy, leafy, touch of verbena, herbal accents and some peppery spice with drying finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Quite hearty stuff. Enjoyable, but not as chuggable as I was hoping for. Nice nonetheless.
