Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, roasted malt, caramel, and spices. The flavor is very sweet with notes of prune juice, roasted malt, and caramel, leading to a dry finish.

Can at home from Mikkeller & Friends Bottle Shop 21/07/2023 Heard so much about this and it certainly doesn’t disappoint with a lovely aroma and taste bringing layers of sweet caramel and toffee, cocoa accents, dried fruit shred, intense bourbon and whisky coalesce throughout, lingering malty finish. Exquisite.

Superstrong dark barleywine by this Mancunian brewery, sample at Gents Bierfestival. Thin and open, greyish beige, interrupted ring of tiny-bubbled foam on a dark chocolate brown beer with copper red glow. Aroma of chocolate liqueur, caramel sauce, brown rum, cinnamon, nougat, cognac, muscovado sugar, golden raisins, vanillin from oak wood. Sweet, dense onset, candied sweet with notes of candied fig and pear jam, very softly carbonated as expected from this kind of beer, with unsurprisingly thick and near-syrupy mouthfeel; thick, heavy slabs of toffee-, nougat- and even lightly chocolate-like malts ensue, under a layer of residual ‘brown’ sugariness and towards an evidently warming, rum- and brandy-like finish, a bit peppery but still quite well in balance with the malts and in that sense far less scorching and obtrusive than I was fearing. Slight herbal hop bitterish note as well but malts obviously rule supreme here; the wooden barrel is noticeable, offering its typical oak flavour, but does not push itself to the foreground too much. Intense, sweet, a bit too strong and too syrupy for my personal liking perhaps, but undeniably very well made – the whole thing works, and I can picture myself downing a cognac glass of this at home on a chilly winter evening.

No head left; cola-coloured beer. Chocolate, liquorice, old nuts, preserved red & dried fruit, dates. Sweet, liqueurish, fortified wine; prunes, chocolate, figs & dates. Full bodied, very slick to viscous, bit burning, lots of alcoholwarming. Quite good barley wine!
