Limitedly made anniversary beer, a spiced ‘bière brut’ celebrating the 25 years of existence of the Malheur brand, created by the De Landtsheer brewery in Buggenhout and still independent to this day. Corked 75 cl bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas, now owned by Dullaert. Egg-white, frothy and thick, coarse, cobweb-lacing, large-bubbled yet stable head over a misty warm golden beer with apricot hue and lots of tiny bubbles sparkling throughout. Aroma dominated by soapy herbs and most reminiscent of peppermint and lavender, also thyme and coriander, rosewater, white bread slices, green apples, moist white pepper, minerals. Sweetish, fruity onset, green pear and unripe peach notes, Granny Smith apple, medium effervescence; honeyish residual sugar sweetness draped over a sleek white-bready, cereally middle, seemingly filled with a portion of white candi sugar and in that sense feeling a tad ‘empty’, under an increasing mentholic and otherwise herbal-aromatic effect bringing back all the peppermint (candy and leaf), coriander and fresh thyme. Before long, though, the attention is drawn to a rooty, bit earthy but in any case long and powerful end bitterness, hoppy but no doubt strongly reinforced by the used herbs as well (alkaloids). Still some pear-like sweetness lingers, and quite pronounced, wodka-like alcohol rounds things off in the very end, perhaps a bit too obviously so. Rather odd ‘bière brut’, the substyle of Belgian strong ale pioneered by this very brewery along with its now AB InBev-owned fellow townsman Bosteels; the menthol- and thyme-like herbal effects are way too strong and soapy here, and the relatively thin body (despite ABV) proves incapable of absorbing the alcohol, making for a somewhat boozy ending. Still an interesting construction of flavours, in a sense, just not my personal cup of tea (peppermint tea in this case) – I guess I was expecting something totally different for this occasion.

Based on Malheur 10, this beers offers different hops and extra spices. Pours unclear, darker blonde. Small white head. Scent is very spicy, cardamon, bit too high on spices, lacks some balance. Taste is full, fairly bitter, malty, spices are better in balance in the taste than it was in the aroma. Mildly sweet finish.
