One in a series of yearly IPAs by Jopen brewed with rye, with the hop varieties differing each year; this 2022 one contains Sorachi Ace, the new HBC431 and Columbus. Again thanks to Hinke for the can! Thick, foamy, very dense, egg-white, regular, membrane-lacing, pillowy head on a cloudy yellow blonde beer with ochre-ish tinge. Aroma of old lime zest, kumquat, dried garden weeds and freshly cut thistles, pine resin, leftover dough, deep-fried basil leaves, petrichor, cedar, hints of unripe pineapple, white pepper, yellow grapefruit, ground ivy, cranesbill. Juicy onset but not as sweet and exuberantly fruity as usual for a hazy IPA, unripe pineapple, touch guava and some green kiwi, green apple as well, lively carbonated with minerally side effects; smooth body, a tad powdery, white-bready and grainy with this typical rye spiciness lurking from underneath in a very recognisable way. Powerfully hopped, in a peppery, bit piney (Columbus!) and citrusy way, the latter grapefruity as well as more tropical (pomelo); some herbal aromas of kitchen herbs pierce through as well, dill perhaps, which I can only associate with the Sorachi Ace. The hops add bitterness, more so than usual for a hazy IPA, but in a relatively gentle way, leaving room for some basic fruity juiciness, also coming from the hops themselves of course, to move along. Quite bitter for this kind of IPA, but as an oldskool West Coast IPA lover, I cannot be bothered of course - just do not expect a tropical fruit juice bomb. Altogether pleasant, but no doubt much of its hoppy fragrance has already dwindled by now.

(Draught at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam, 26 Aug 2022) Cloudy golden colour with frothy, white head. Malty, hoppy nose with notes of grapefruit, bread and rye. Malty, hoppy taste with grapefruit, bread, spicy rye, a touch of mint and a balanced spicy/citric bitterness. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
