Bold and Funky, a modern take on a Brittany classic.
Gold utilizes Bitter and Bitter-Sweet Apples, Bretagne cider-makers most cherished and traditional varietals.
Its high tannins give it the full body and pleasant bitterness that will excite everyone from traditionalists to adventurous newcomers.
Mindfully Modern: 1000 years of tradition can finally be shotgunned.
Pairs well with: Mezcal (straight from the bottle if you want, we won’t judge you), an entire box of gingerbread cookies, literally every Curry in existence

Aromas are somehow just right apple cider; plus a bit floral. Flavors are similar to nose and lightly sweet. A touch medicinal.

Golden with a small white head. Must and medicinal with a faint apple flesh note. Long finish. Medium body.

May 2018: 330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6%. Clear deep golden colour, pours sparkling with a shortlived white head. Pleasant aroma of cider apples and oak. Dry flavour, cider apples and oak again, "dusty" finish. *Sampled again Oct. 2023, 750 ml corked & caged green bottle, as Aval Cidre Artisanal, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6%. Even more "farmhouse" character this time, very good cider.

Single can. Lo-ball back at the hotel. Clear, medium gold, soda sizzle. Cheesy, mellow barnyard, wormy apple. Earthy, bittersweet apple, vanilla, browned sweetness, dried pineapple sulfites, slight barnyard, white wine, cheese, mild carbonation. All the funk minus any flavors to build on. Pass.

11.2 oz. can from the brewer's rep. If memory serves, the pour is a little darker than the previous Aval: a bit more amber to it. The usual fizz that goes away immediately. Smell has a bit of green apple tartness. Taste is similarly more tart. Not extra sour, but balanced by sweet apple juice. Not easy to just swig down. Invites contemplation.

Funky apple juice. Little dry. Third and final French cider. Pic: Eric Cantona with a kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace supporter.

On tap at Capitol Cider, pours a clear pale blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out barnyard funk, crisp apple skins, champagne-like effervescence. Flavour is fairly dry, with champagne-like effervescence, gentle funk, crisp apple skins, and a touch of residual sweetness. Not the most complex or funk French cider but it's pretty solid.
