Tinted ruby-black, Cherry Stout gains its signature tartness from 100% Montmorency cherries grown in Michigan's Traverse City region.
Rather than doubling up on sweetness, this tart cherry varietal serves as a counterpoint to the warm, dark chocolate notes from the malt bill. Lightly hopped for balance, this stout is one of the cornerstones of our stout portfolio.

Bottle from kosko20, marked 7734. Pours thick, with a dark brown layer of head and a black body. Head checks out in amout a minit leaving a ring and good lacing with a bit of alcohol legs above. The head can be called back at will. Aroma is strong at a distance with tart cherries, boat loads of malt, chocolate, tannins, cocoa powder and a bit of leather. Taste is an interesting balance of roast and dark tart cherries, a bit ashy or sootie as well. Second sip yields strong fruit up front and an espresso roast in the finish. Very smouth mouthfeel and light carbonation. Noted to self to add bourbon barrel version to the wants list, cause I liked this version, and I like bourbon more...

Poured a reddish, purple dark. The head was reddish/brownish as well. Had a well balanced taste of cherry, chocolate and a clear roasted aftertaste. A definite suprise stout, pleasing to the palate. The extra cherry flavor is very enjoyable and make it a very interesting stout.

Bottle. Tart cherry aroma over toasted malt. Opaque black color with a tan head that left promptly. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is dark, dark, dark. It’s slightly sweet, but the almost unnoticeable cherries do impart a balancing tartness. This is deadly stuff. How can you sip just once? The finish is amazingly complicated. This brew just doesn’t quit. Eventually a woody astringency (cherry pits?) is noticeable. After that some chocolate comes forward. A brew to ponder.

Pour is a black with a little red around the edges. Aroma is a nice mix of chocolate and cherries with a nice sweetness. Flavor is something different. Way over the top cherry that overpowers any other flavor this beer might have. Finish is very bitter and sour. Not my cup of tea when it comes to beer and finishing this one might be a chore.

Pours nice and dark with thin mocha head and just a little bit of spotty lacing. The aroma is nice and roasty along with burnt malts and chocolate. To go along with the malts is a fruity cherry sourness. The taste starts with a rich roasted maltiness medley of malts like sweet malts, chocolate malts and roasty malts. Before the maltiness can be reconciled cherry fruitiness joins the fray with sort of a sour tart cherriness that becomes less sweet and more and more tart as the taste progresses toward midway where it levels off. Into the finish the maltiness overtakes the fruity tartness with roastiness, hints burnt malts, chocolate malts and coffee.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin tan head atop the beer and as you tilt the glass to the sides, you see a faint ruby tint. Aroma of alcohol, sherry, port, roasted malt, bitter chocolate and some nice Michigan cherries. Medium to Full-bodied; Tang of cherries up front fading quickly into a strong malty finish complete with the bitter qualities of roasted malt and chocolate & coffee. Aftertaste shows the bitterness with a bit of the cherry fruityness throughout. Overall, a decent beer - not as strong in the cherry flavour as I had hoped for, but all-in-all a good beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 29-October-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Delicious strong aroma of roasted barley, bordering on beef. Opaque black pour with a medium brown head, good lacing. The taste is complex and incredibly well balanced with a tastefully viscous mouthfeel. Coffee and cherry layers rest on a bed of charred lamb. It finishes rapidly into a whisper of smoke. Superb!

Bottle. Part 3 of 4 of my Bell’s stout-fest, and my least favorite so far. Pours black with, obviously, a cherry aroma. The taste is very sour cherry at the start that devolves into a very mediocre porter. Hard to drink, as the taste at the end of the bottle was more barbecue sauce than anything,

Smallish dark-brown-greige head; near-black beer with a ruby-purple shine. Sweetish coffee nose with indistinct fruity aroma’s. First very fruity-sweet, then dry roasted coffee, with a sourish ending, quite fruity again, near roasted-stoutlike wheatsourness. Absolutely surprising perfect balance sweet-sourish-bitterish. Quite well-bodied, nice acidic tonguelining. Another excellent Bell’s product - all the more surprising as I was dreading the outcome. Chapeau! Thanks, DaveDave!
