Can. Color: Hazy golden, going towards orange amber, white head. Aroma: Hoppy, fruity stonefruit, pineapple. West-Coast like. Taste: Again West Coast like. Hoppy, grassy, some stonefruit, pineapple and hints of grapefruit. Malty base with hints of caramel. Medium body, average carbonation. Moderate sweet and moderate going to over moderate bitterness at the dry finish. Ok for a supermarket beer.

It seems that after the takeover by Swinkels (Bavaria), trusted Uiltje has produced almost exclusively beers that sit comfortably in the contemporary Dutch palate - and luckily, thanks to pioneers like De Molen and Emelisse two decades ago, that includes IPA, in this case hopped with Kent Golding, Mosaic, Simcoe and Idaho 7. Can with all the cartoonesque artwork we know from Uiltje, bought at the Albert Heijn supermarket in Lokeren today. Medium thick, egg-white, cobweb-lacing, very moussey, stable head on a lightly misty, pure golden blonde robe with apricot tinge. Aroma of pink grapefruit flesh, yellow kiwi, guava, toasted onion (Simcoe!), watermelon, young wormwood leaves, spruce tips, acacia honey or even black locust blossoms somewhere, biscuit (thinly), dry cookies, hot olive oil. Crisp, clean onset, subduedly sweetish, with quite sharply stinging carbonation adding a lot of minerality (uncalled for in any IPA for me, but anyway), hinting at green mango, guava, pear and green melon, before a slick yet full, smooth, oily maltiness sets in filling the middle with cereally, biscuity and lightly cookie-like flavours, drenched in citric, only slightly tropical, bit oniony and lightly piney hop aromas, providing an admittedly fascinating combo hovering somewhere in between good old West Coast and East Coast, with certain NEIPA influences. The NEIPA feel, which Uiltje is however good at, remains fairly understated, because the hops do develop a firm, altogether mellow yet confident and consistent, peppery, leafy, somewhat grapefruity and piney bitterness, which lasts for a long time. In the end, it is merely the Idaho 7 which provides a NEIPA element here, bringing on the mango and guava, but the Mosaic - acting like everyone's friend - seems to support the other three hops here, which (combined) establish a more West Coast feel than many self-proclaimed contemporary 'West Coast IPAs' do. Especially the long bitterness and the oniony and piney aromas of the Simcoe bring me into West Coast spheres here, so even though the substyle remains unspecified, this Craftbeer Cookout most certainly looks back at bygone days when West Coast IPA was the only option - and was indeed often accompanied by a barbecue... Extra points for being old school - apparently Bavaria still has not completely ruined this brand, which played such an influential and leading role in that marvellous Dutch craft beer revolution when it was still alive and kicking. If Uiltje can still produce a barley wine or imperial stout as oldskool as this IPA, then the takeover by demonic Bavaria is, perhaps, easily forgiven... In all: very tasty, relatively old-fashioned and better than expected.

Can at home. Light amber or darker orange colored beer, medium to full sized long lasting white head. Aroma and flavor are lightly malts, hops, quite nicely hoppy bitter. Flavor is similar and again there's a very nice hoppy bitterness, somewhat fruity in the distance but mostly piney and resinous. Quite pleasant! I really like this one. Good!

Op tap bij Borefts ´23. Diepgouden kleur, witte kraag. Hoppig, grassig en wat dennen, licht zoetje, redelijk fris. Lichte body. Niet helemaal mijn hopsoorten maar verder prima.

Tap. Clear golden color with white head. Aroma is dank, fruity, white sugar. Taste is the same, some bitterness and grassiness in the back, fizzy carbonation. Fun enough.
