Mexican-Style Chocolate Stout with Pumpkin Puree

Every so often, a competitor reaches a pinnacle. When that happens, the only way to keep things interesting is to go unorthodox. Lucha’s at the top. No doubt about it. He’s got nothing left to prove against mere human beings. So how about against a giant pumpkin wrestler with an evil robot brain? Enter: the Gorgeous Gourd! He may have incredibly tough pumpkin skin, and super strength, but Lucha has four fists ready to unleash destruction and fury.

LCI. The pumpkin is very light, but in my opinion muddies the beer.

Pours dark brown with a frothy creme head. Aroma of pumpkin spice. Taste has pumpkin spice, chocolate malt. Palate has loads of nutmeg, some squash, cinnamon, chocolate. Good.

Pours near black. It smells of roast malt, chocolate, and pumpkin. The flavor is fairly sweet with chocolatey roast malt, a definite spicy character, and pumpkin. It’s full bodied and works very well.

Nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Black with moderate tan head. Moderately sweet nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, chocolate malt, and moderately bitter hay and ash flavor. Good body.

Can from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear, very dark brown with a very large tan head that seemed foamy. Aroma of pie spice, chocolate, squash. Med plus body. Flavor is more or less the aroma. Plus dark burnt malt. Not dry, far from sticky. More spicey than bitter. Flavor is not at all harsh.

16 ounce can. Opaque dark brown color. Large frothy tan head. Spotty lacing. Sweet roasted malt aroma hints at cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Flavor mirrors aroma. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, pumpkin pie spices and molasses. Some stickiness on the palate, though not overly so. The spices balance nicely with the dark sweet malt. Medium bodied, but not what I expected for this brew. Overall, a decent effort.

Canned 7/25/22, drunk 10/9/22. Clear dark brown with a quickly fizzling, dark beige head. Nose is....cinnamon mostly. There is some pumpkin character which is nice and very light vanilla. While there's no sugar or booze, there's really not a whole lot more than the adjunct. Rather lacking in the beer category here. But it's clean, at least. Shockingly dry in the mouth, wow. Wouldn't have seen that coming from CS. Pretty adjunct-heavy and a bit thin on the malt with little depth. Honestly, if they had just dialed back the cinnamon, this would be a lot more interesting and bearable. As is, it's drinkable on account of the dryness, but there's so little texture/malt here that it gets boring almost immediately.

16 oz. can from The Mansion. Pours a pitch black color with a large nitro-like tan head and great retention. Good lacing. Chocolate and spices aroma. The flavor is more chocolate stout than anything else, with a light spice in the finish. Not bitter Not really a pumpkin beer; Just a spiced stout. A nice fall change from a regular stout. The 7.0% ABV is undetectable. Low carbonation.
