On keg at SMoD tap - recommended by the eponymous Grimbold - deep brown body, off white top. Lots of maltiness and dark cake fruits in the taste, nose is bonfire toffee. Really nice choice Grimbold (woof).

Can from Grumpy Goat, Reading. Aroma combines praline with berries. Opaque ruby tinged brown. Foamy beige head soon recedes. Tangy medium dark berries. Hints of burnt caramel. Chewy. Medium bodied. Slick. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. Punchy sour Brown, man.

Can at the inlaws, from HOTM online, 24/08/23. Extremely dark mahogany to cola brown with a beige cap that thins to spotting. Nose is fruit cake mix, raisins, brown sugar, figs, toffee. Taste comprises fruit slice, raisins, brown bread, light treacle toffee, brown sugar dusting. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent brown.

Can at home in Hackney. Picked up from HOTM. Pours clear, deep brown with reddish highlights and a small, creamy khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with hearty semi-dark malts, lots of fruity notes, berries, brown bread, nips of toast, subtle earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with more rounded malt character, berries. Easygoing and tasty.

I was told that this beer was inspired by Theakstons Old Peculier, and named after the brewery’s dog. Anyway, can from Ebenezers, Nantwich and shared there with Erika. Pours a muddy dark brown with a small cream head and good lacing. The aroma takes time to come through but does so eventually. There’s dried fruit there, along with prunes In the mouth it is slightly sweet with some hoppy hints underneath, and a gravy like consistency. Cola is the base flavour, but lots of others make fleeting appearances, dark fruits, raisins, dates, figs – even some traces of aniseed. Dried fruit lasts into the finish. This is rather nice. I would agree that it’s a brown ale rather than an old ale (like OP) though.

Silver bullet courtesy of Dann and Martha. Cheers. Mostly clear dark cola brown. Lively beige foam dissipates. Some vine fruit and hints of caramel. Light well done crust malts. Taste has a little caramel sweetness up front but is mostly ashy dry with a vinous bitterness. Fairly thin on the palate with lively carbonation. Dry and light bitter finish. Was hoping for more with this one tbh.
