Hazy orange, stable head. Ripe melon, mango, cheese, diesel, biscuit. Sweet melon, tangerine, onion, cheese. Floral hops, dank melon, grape, warming gin-like alcohol. Oily texture. Full and tasty, great balance between substyles.

Double (or even ‘triple’) New Zealand style IPA by Norway’s – or in fact Europe’s – great pioneer in terms of modern U.S. style craft brewing, sampled at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest 2023. Cream white, thick, dense, creamy, stable head on a hazy orange-tinged peach blonde robe. Aroma of oranges, grapefruit zest, green peppercorns, granadilla, shallot, lychee, cake dough, marmalade, gin. Sweet onset reminiscent of marmalade and candied orange as well as honeydew and lychee, softly carbonated with very full, creamy body, biscuity to almost rye-bready maltiness, a bit cake-ish in sweetness but tempered by a long, powerfully zesty, peppery, orangey and grapefruity hoppiness in itself accentuated by peppery, gin-like alcohol – in the end providing more bitterness than the hops. A big boozy IPA in a kind of ‘compromise’ style, hazy and tropical for sure but not over the top, with a grapefruity and peppery aspect to it reminiscent of the old West Coast traditions too. In any case: good that this brewery is still productive after the takeover by Hansa, I almost forgot how good they actually were, and apparently still are.

50 cl bottle @ home. Batch #2743, bottled 05.06.2023, BBE 25.06.2025 Aroma has sweetish tropical fruits. Flavour has sweet resiny malt, alcohol, some fruitiness. Too strong on alcohol even in fridge temperature.

10/XI/23 - on tap @ Billies Craft Beer Festival (Antwerp), Day 1 - part 1, BB: n/a (2023-919) Thanks to NathanVC for sharing today’s beers!
Clear orange beer, creamy off-white head, stable, adhesive, leaving lots of nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, honey, a bit oxidized, sugary impression. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: very sweet start, honey, sugary, a bit oxidised, caramel malts, gentle bitterness, pretty fruity, some alcohol. Aftertaste: hoppy, a bit soapy, floral touch, more alcohol, caramel malts, ok, not great.

Bottle. It pours a small, dense, off-white head over an unclear mostly orange colored body. The aroma is quite fruity-sweetish, with some alcohol and a light maltyness. Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit, some pine cones and a light bready touch. It's quite light on the palate, at least not as full-bodied as many DIPA's, with a soft, gentle carbonation and a good alcohol warmth. There's bitterness in there as well, but not enough to scare anyone. Sweet fruity flavor with some alcohol sting. Mostly tropical fruityness, with some pine cone bite and a gentle touch of pale malts. Long sweet finish. Lots of nice things going on here, but it's too sweet for me, and it wouldn't hurt to lower the ABV slightly either I think. 230919
