“Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.”
We were inspired by Scottish Highlands and peated Scotch whisky. Brewed with peated malt and aged in the sherry barrel it’s more or less fermented whisky - if there is such thing.
It’s best enjoyed like whisky too - in a small glass and savoring every sip.
Experience: The thin layer of foam disappears rapidly, leaving in the glass bright orange beer. Dried apples, dates and hint of caramel sweetness preparing you for the main act - peat smoked malt and sherry barrels.
While in the aroma, exceptionally high alcohol was somewhat hidden, there is no way around it in the flavor. The sip starts with slightly fruity and sweet but turns quickly into warming wave of alcohol. There isn’t too much form the beer vocabulary to describe the experience. Is there peat liquor? Probably smokey whiskey is much better starting point o understand the beast.
In the aftertaste, there is a long tintinnabuli of peat smoke and malt sweetness.

0.33 l bottle from 'Speciaalbierpakket.nl', best before April 2024, cellared for about a year. Hazy, dark reddish amber with a few, quickly diminishing, white bubbles on top of it. Sweetish, intensely smoky-medicinal, a little fruity aroma of caramel, peat, iodine and some raisins. Quite sweet, malty, extremely smoky-medicinal, rather boozy taste of caramel, massive peat, iodine, raisins, candied cherries, some honey, juniper and ash, followed by a very long, gently bitter, fairly smoky-medicinal and very boozy finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Heavy but super interesting, comes close to an Islay Whisky but with half the alcohol. Still extremely boozy, but that's no surprise. Glad to have tried it!

Bottle. Amber pour. Aroma of meaty smoke, peat, fruity sherry, raisin, ripe red fruit and a little malt. Taste has heavy meaty peated malt, strong smoke, rich fruity sherry, raisin, ripe, cherry, peach, nectarine and a really long intense scotch heavy finish. This is quite something, an extreme beer-whisky hybrid. I really like it, but you really need to appreciate peaty scotch to enjoy this. I think it's delicious.

No head to speak of, hazy brown beer. Peat/phenols a mile out, like freshly tarred leather. Warmth/alcohol/phenol explosion as approaching a peat fire. Leatherwax, ketonic, but in a quite good way. Finished as if it were really whisky infused. Alcoholheat, obviously, even oily feel. Low carbonation. Aftertaste displays more sweetness - alcoholrelated no doubt. Not one for the fainthearted, but we quite liked it!

Tap at TCBW 2019. Pours amber. Aroma and flavor are basically peated whiskey - booze, peat, fruits, malt, caramel. Finish is massive burning booze. Overall: didn't enjoy this at all.
