“Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.”
We were inspired by Scottish Highlands and peated Scotch whisky. Brewed with peated malt and aged in the sherry barrel it’s more or less fermented whisky - if there is such thing.
It’s best enjoyed like whisky too - in a small glass and savoring every sip.
Experience: The thin layer of foam disappears rapidly, leaving in the glass bright orange beer. Dried apples, dates and hint of caramel sweetness preparing you for the main act - peat smoked malt and sherry barrels.
While in the aroma, exceptionally high alcohol was somewhat hidden, there is no way around it in the flavor. The sip starts with slightly fruity and sweet but turns quickly into warming wave of alcohol. There isn’t too much form the beer vocabulary to describe the experience. Is there peat liquor? Probably smokey whiskey is much better starting point o understand the beast.
In the aftertaste, there is a long tintinnabuli of peat smoke and malt sweetness.

Bottle shared at Wundi. Pours a copperish deeper golden with no head. Nose is heavy peated notes, some underlying malts maybe, buz mainly peated whisky. The taste follows in similar fashion, it’s heavy, boozy and peated. Closes with a long lasting, warming finish, it has a huge body with almost no carbonation. It might be a bit one dimensional and boozy, but I’m a sucker for it for sure.

Sample, thanks oh6gdx! Clear amber, minimal head. Peppery peaty nose with intense alcohol and notes of pear brandy. Sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Smoky prune brandy, whisky and tar. Intensely warming finish.

Bottle (from Lehe webshop). Ambery pale brown colour with a tiny white head, which disappears quite fast. Aroma is peat, some dried fruits, wood and mild herbs. Flavour is peated, some floral, fruity and mild wooden tones with a quite sharpish alcohol kick to it in the finish. Almost like sipping on a good whisky this one. Closer to the Highlands than a beer though... Boozy finish.

Bottled 330ml (Vintage 2022, alc. 21,9%)
Dark brown colour, no head. Peat and wood dominates the aroma, then some booze and sweetness. Medium-bodied. Sweetish, peaty, woody with burning alcohol. Not the most balanced brew although peatyness is nice.

Draft sample @ Swafff! 2022 - shared with the Gentse Bierverniging team.
