Feeling nostalgic this year, we dove into our Bourbon County vault and pulled out an iconic recipe. In 2013, we released “Backyard Rye” and our senior innovation manager Mike Siegel found himself hand picking mulberries off trees just steps away from our Goose Island Barrel House in Chicago. Inspired by that initial release and by his own childhood memories of picking fruit in his own backyard, Mike set to work on this year’s Bourbon County Backyard Stout.
This barrel-aged stout was first aged in bourbon barrels for at least one year, and then finished and blended with mulberries, boysenberries and marionberries. Each addition of berry contributes its own distinct flavor profile, with some adding sweetness and others providing acidity and complexity. A taste of the past, this imperial stout is a balanced and nuanced play on fresh fruit, vanilla, and chocolate.

Bottle. An unclear, almost murky, dark brown beer, headless. Boozy aroma with roasted malts, some dark chocolate and oak. It's full bodied and warming, sweet, with bitterness and tannins. Dark chocolate, coffee, booze and roasted malts, brown sugar and some oak in the flavor. Lasting finish. Rather unbalanced and not very good. 240907

Bottle (2023 vintage) 18/05/2024 Malmö May 2024 tasting at Palace Hall - rich dark sweet and roasted malts, silky chocolate, full bodied, getting some dark berry fruity accents into the bourbon infused sweet malty finish. Lovely.

2023 bottle shared at tasting. Dark brown color, tan head. Aroma definitely has a lot of red fruit / berries. Flavor fortunately has a little less red fruit and in the end I quite like it. Not bad. Far from the best ofc but still alright.

Bottle. A- Berries, cocoa. A- Black color, black liquid, minimal head. T- Berries, booze, chocolate, slightly roasty. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Lots of berry. I've never been a huge fan of berries in stout, but it's well made. Probably my least favorite BCBS variant I've tasted but a solid beer.
