Ise Kadoya Kumano Kodo Beer Not sure the style on this I’ve seen brown ale and Belgian dark ale listed online. I’d say it’s a brown ale. Mild herbal hoppiness with balanced caramel malt sweetness. Nothing special really but ok.

Can picked up at a souvenir shop on the way back from Shirahama. 5% roughly 350 yen, I had no idea it was brewed by Ise Kadoya! Very pale for a brown ale, a honey brown with q decent head. Served in a pint glass. Surprisingly hoppy though mild aroma of Saaz spice & grass/herbal notes. A thin-medium body with some brown ale sweet & nutty character followed by a sour citrusy finish which then has some malt notes popping up again. It is Good enough but not amazing, try it if you see it but you don’t need to seek it out I think.

Can. Golden amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is lightly spicy, bit of caramel, grassy hops with a touch of citrus. Smells pretty nice. Taste is a bit disappointing, light caramel, small bitterness at the finish, but feels a bit thin. Little bit of fruit and some sweetness. Nice enough, but maybe not so interesting. Feel like it could be much nicer with a few little tweaks, mainly a bit more body.

Crisp golden coloured body with a pure white head. Aroma of light grasses, some hay, light metal and a touch of subdued herbal hops - relatively nice. Light-bodied; Grassy flavour at first with some more pungent malty and metallic flavours throughout with a touch of light cereal and some mellow herbal hops, but this is pretty much just about the stale-ish malt qualities. Aftertaste shows some grass and light alcohol, but more of the metal and pungent grass and astringent notes. Overall, a decent beer, but not showing much more than a typical lager from the East despite some grassier and herbal hop notes that were noticeable earlier on. I sampled this 35 cL can purchased from City’Super at One IFC in the IFC Mall, in Central, Hong Kong [island] on 29-July-2017 for HK$24,00 sampled on the streets of a very hot Hong Kong on 31-July-2017.

Actually tastes better in the can than it does in a glass.
Good beer for the same price as shitty beers. That's a deal!

Can from 360 Liquor @ Shinjuku station. Clear orange color. Uneven and sticky off white head. Aroma: resinous, citrus. Retronasal it’s caramel malty, light citrus. Flavor is mostly neutral, a bit ale-fruity with light sweetness. Light bodied. Finish is just slightly dry with a hint of bitterness. Started out promising with the aroma, but the rest was disappointing.

Can from Foodshow in Shibuya. Nice light stone fruit and peach nose. Average carbonation with a medium body. Fairly clean and not as malt driven as many brown ales are in Japan. Nice, peppery bitterness on the finish. It’s OK, but not necessary by any means. --- Beer merged from original tick of Kumano Kodo Beer (熊野古道麥酒) on 13 May 2016 at 19:11 - Score: 6. Original review text: Meh. Not what I was in the mood for.

Yatagarasu beer - a three-legged giant crow that lead legendary first Emperor Jimmu of Japan from Kumano to Yamato. The creature is also pictured on the 350 ml can. I guess I got it from Takashimaya at Nagoya station. Pours nice clear amber with a frothy head that dissipates soon into a thin film. Aroma is fruity, light tropical hops, promising for a good and refreshing gulp. Taste has some malty sweetness, fruits and rather medium or even light body - that combined with nice hop balance makes it quite quaffable. I think it is actually my second time to try this beer and I seem to like it now more than the last time. Looking forward to the third time.
