We know it may sound weird, but smoking cobras is actually a thing. These extraordinary and very rare snakes can be found in the rain forests of the Southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. First sightings of this odd smoking behavior were made by Spanish conquistadores more than 400 years ago. And back then the Spanish reported that the cobra snakes were simply smoking a cheap brand of cigarettes from the local grocery store. Modern historians have been very reluctant to believe these early reports of abnormal snake behavior, and in many cases the reports have been attributed to the conquistadores experimenting with early attempts at producing hallucinogenic spirits, such as very primitive Mezcal. However, to this day, the reports of smoking cobras have continued to flourish, although modern generations of snakes seem to have developed a much more refined taste in tobacco. According to the most recent sightings, it seems that the Oaxaca cobras will touch nothing but only the best brands in Cuban cigars. In some parts of the rain forest, left over piles of cigar butts and cigar bands are actually becoming an environmental challenge. But a confusing one since cobras are also an endangered species. The local government has set up a program of wildlife consultants trying to educate the cobras to a more environment friendly behavior. The result of this effort has yet to be seen.

Butelka 33cl. Słodowe, owocowe z nutka szlachetnego alkoholu i wanilii, ciut winne, o ile wydaje się słodkie w aromacie to w smaku raczej półwytrawne, pełne z subtelnym alkoholowym finiszem, rozgrzewającym w przełyku, takie trunki to ja szanuję.

33cl bottle from Biiru's Christmas Calendar. Pours pitch black with a small off-white head. Malty and caramelly with notes of mezcal and hints of cinnamon. Sweet and sugary with medium to high flavour intensity, a bit boozy with warming alcohol. Not too bad as dessert, but not quite my cup of tea.

Bottle. Color: Murky reddish brown, very thin off-white head. Aroma: Earthy, floral (Agave), bit herbal and bit spicy, nuts, some coffee. Taste: Floral, Agave, earthy, dark malt, some cinnamon and coffee, some caramel and hints of nuts. Over medium body, bit sirupy. Just below average carbonation. Quite unusual and interesting barrel, although it's not one of my most favorite beers from this brewery.

Hazy chestnut brown with a lasting off-white head. Malty aroma with toffee, nuts and crackers, vanilla and Mezcal smoke. Sweet malty flavour with some really pleasant barleywine character, but also herbal smoky Mezcal notes that just don't work for me. As with islay whisky (but to a much lesser degree), I prefer the beer and the smoked spirit separate.

33 cl bottle poured into a Snifter. Batch # 1719. Deep red amber colour with a thin off-white head. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, smoked notes, cinnamon, sweet boozy hints - most be the mezcal barrel. Taste is sweet. Full bodied. Sweet lingering finish with caramel malts and booze. Slightly spiced. A bit to hot.

Bottle. Medium hazy coppery colour, medium small offwhite head, not lasting. Medium smoky bacon nose, malty, biscuity. Medium dry fruit. Moderate sweetness, dry fruits and quite a lot of them, woody. Sweeter, vanilla and woody. Nicely drinkable.

Bottled 330ml. -courtesy of Marko, shared with him and hrabren. Red/brown coloured, medium sized off-white head, peanut butter and mezcal in the nose. Peanut butter, alcohol, light marzipan and caramel with discreet wood in the finish. Interesting.

Bottle shared by Caesar. Dark red color, average sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, tobacco, smoke notes, liquor, some sweet notes as well. Not that clearly a barley wine I'd say. Alright.
