Brimming with rich dried fruit, chocolate and roasty-toasty malt flavours. It takes a lot of malt to make an 8.5% beer, and all that sweetness is carefully tempered with peppery hops and the dry finish from our Yorkshire Square fermentation techniques.

BOTTLE 33CL from dcmchew. Thanks, Cristian Mihai.

Look: almost black with red highlights, beige frothy head with poor retention.
Aroma: malty, vanilla, sweet chocolate, some alcohol (should I say ethanol?), oily nuttiness, alcoholic dark fruit.
Taste: sweet, warming alcohol, sweet chocolate, phenolic bitterness, not very roasted, ashy finish.

More like a heavy Baltic porter than an impy.

330ml Bottle - Dark brown with red tinges. Raisins, molasses, roasted malt and a hint of cocoa in the aroma. Fruity, malty, slightly roasted and slightly metallic taste with notes of raisins, liquorice and caramel detected. Not as rich as I was expecting it to be.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with average to huge, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Concentrated dark malty aroma, spicy, salty, hints of soy sauce, lovage, Worcester sauce. Taste is bitter, dark malty, alcoholic, salty. Not my taste.

Cask at the Earl of Essex - Islington, London. Pours black-brown with a creamy beige head. The nose holds dark and leathery fruits with touches of chocolate. Medium sweet flavor with ashy roasted malts, cocoa. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Pretty well balanced to finish with more roasty malts, dry cocoa, and lightly tangy blackberries and raisins. Impressively little alcohol presence. Fair.

330ml bottle shared at home. Good dark pour, not jet black, but dark enough. Aromas are mostly liquorice, toffee, dark stone fruit. Good balance of biter to sweet, but overall a bit thin. Not a patch on a stronger IRS, but a good enough beer.

Bottle from Trembling Madness in York. Pours dark brown with dark orange glints. Not much head. Boozy dark fruit/dark malt aroma. Full bodied. Flavor is dark fruit, smooth burnt dark malt, and something thatโ€™s suggesting anise. I think this is rather complex. It does seem less thick than many ISs, but itโ€™s also got quite a different flavor profile. Very interesting and tasty. Hereโ€™s what I should have gotten: "Initial sweetness quickly followed by a peppery hop which fades into liquorice and chocolate raisins, then a very long warming finish. We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer!"

330ml bottle - Iโ€™ll give a "not bad" for appearance, dark brown body with a small (but lasting) beige head. Chocolate, coffee, liquorice, roasted biscuity nose. Mocha and biscuit taste, bit of a roasted malts in the foreground, but none of the boozy warmth expected for an 8.5% ABV. Bit of a watery mouthfeel, almost like drinking cola with the bit of fizz on the tongue. For an Imperial Stout it is (like others have said) very light, but refreshing at the same time.
