The era of a new king is dawning. Long live King Rufus the barley wine which reigns supreme with an impressive 15.6% ABV. An aficionado beer for the rumbustious, the complex malts and light use of hops imbue this English Barleywine with a bellicosity that borders on belligerent. As you take your first sip, you’ll be greeted by a symphony of malty sweetness, dark fruits, and a subtle hint of alcohol. Warming and supple this big beer fuels your soul for the dark days of winter and leaves you in awe of the king’s dominion. Cheers to the king of barleywines

330 ml can. Pours a reddish brown with short head. Aromas of toffee, sweet dark fruit leaning towards raisins, and toasty malts. Flavors of dry caramel, raisins, a little candi sugar, toasted malts and a blast of alcohol. Definitely along the English style, but perhaps a bit much of the ABV… Overall a decent sipper though.

Can from Drankenhandel Leiden. Boozy with an aroma of malt, caramel, dried fruits, alcohol, raisin. A nutty touch. Big sweet boozy flavour, body is medium plus. Just too heavy for its own sake.

Can. It's an almost clear one, copper to amber colored and topped by a small beige head soon disappearing. Still. The aroma has alcohol, toffee, some spiced hints and nuts. Dried fruit, caramel sauce and a hint of booze. It's full-bodied, warming and decently carbonated. Quite bitter, with a good sweetness as well. Raisin, licorice, spices, nuts, toffee, roasted malts and licorice in the flavor. Lasting finish. A bit too boozy this one, but nice indeed. 241226

22/10/2024. Draft at Craft Beer Market. Toranomon, Tokyo. Pours slightly hazy mid-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is boozy, golden syrup, sweet malts, biscuit, dried fruits. Very nice syrupy sweetness with good bitterness. Full bodied, very smooth, soft carbonation. Warming alcohol finish. Good finisher if a little harsh.

Flight at BREW., Lisbon, Portugal. Pours an elegant brown, fairly transparent/clear, with no foam. Aroma is caramel, molasses, wood, a little bourbon. Body is thick, fairly sticky, smooth, with light tickling carbonation. Taste is definitely sweet, but moderate by the pleasant carbonation. Final is slightly spicy, whole still being intensely malty, for a very entertaining feeling.

Tap @ Bøker og Børst. Almost clear amber body under a small tan head. Aroma is dominated by dry fruits in particular raisins. Some alcohol. Taste is sweet malt, lots of dry fruits and some warming alcohol. Full bodied with long lasting aftertaste. Nice but a bit one dimensional on the raisins flavor.
