In this venture, we wanted a barleywine that has roots in the classic American barleywines of Northern California and Oregon, but with a more modern twist. This isn’t your tooth enamel ripping IBU war barleywine, but it’s also not your candy sweet Midwest reinvention. It’s a modern barleywine for a modern world.

12 oz can purchased at Fair State Brewing Cooperative in Minneapolis, Minnesota, The pour is a clear amber copper with a one inch light tan foamy head. Falls slow. The aroma is caramel toffee, sweet malt, a bit of tinny metallic and floral honey. The taste is big full toffee malt, dry floral, some honey and finishes with integrated warming alcohol. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and the warming malt sweet finish. Nice Barley Wine.

The subdued aromas are toffee, floral hops and a bit of caramel. Flavors are similar to nose, floral comes out a little more along with some citrus and resin, a hint metallic. No sign of alcohol. Decent body, bittersweet finish. Not bad.
