This year's IWD is a Black IPA. We were joined by women from all stretches of the brewing world for our annual International Women's Collaboration Brew Day and the brilliant minds came up with this special beer. Extra Pale malt with some carefully blended dark malts has given us a beautiful black colour with little roast flavour. Ultra Dark Malt Extract from Muntons gave the colour a serious boost. We fermented with BRY 97 from Lallemand yeast for a clean West Coast style to allow the hops to shine through. For the hops we wanted to explore Crosby Hops CGX cryogenic lupulin hop pellets. We used Crosby Hop's Columbus, Azacca CGX™ and Amarillo CGX™ which has produced punchy pine and citrusy orange West Coast goodness.

Draft at the Sea Farmers Dive Taproom, Whitstable. Poured almost black in colour with an everlasting frothy off-white head. The aroma is roasty, dank, grassy hops. The flavour is over moderate bitter, with a crisp, fresh, dank, light resin, herbal, hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Can from Cork & Cask. Black body with a tan head. Faint lacing. Aroma of toffee, leather, coffee and biscuit. Flavour of roasted malt, pine and blueberry. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. This is an excellent BIPA.

Keg at the Chelmsford Craft Beer Festival. Near opaque dark brown beer, tidy bubbly pale tan head. Airy palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Fairly mellow dark malts, mild touches of roast, coffee and just a whisper of dark chocolate, pleasant nontheless. Crisp piney hops. Very mild but reasonably bright orange citrus coming through on the back end. Light crisp finish. Not a 'wow' Black IPA, but just really nicely put together and drinkalble, very sessionable.
