Necessary Evil has been taken to the next level once more!

We have released another version of our multi award winning Imperial Stout. Necessary Evil Triple Sec is aged in bourbon barrels that have subsequently matured the revered orange liqueur! Aromas of candied Seville orange are followed by a rich, full bodied and oily citrus tang to balance out the sweet, vanilla oaky-ness synonymous with our flagship Barrel Aged beer.

Aged for 8 months in Triple Sec barrels, our flagship Imperial Stout has taken on the citrus character of the orange liqueur, giving a counterpoint to its dark heart.

Bottle at home, from Thornbridge online, 21/01/23. Black with a good sized tan head that settles to a swirl. Nose is ripe bourbon, toffee, dark malts, booze tunes, light candied orange peel, spice, mellow roast. Taste comprises dried fruit esters, big bourbon snifter, caramel, brown sugar melt, light spice, booze, hint of orange liqeur. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced rising boost. Solid BA impy ... don't be put off by the seemingly lowly 3.6 ... some random 1.0 from a rater who only ticks and another random low score from someone working off a different scale to the bulk of folks.

5th October 2022 Opaque black brown beer with a good tan head that fizzes away quickly. Nose is mild chocolate and orange liqueur. For 13%, this has a light palate, mildly dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Smooth dark malts and not too heavy or sticky but bringing a good smooth dark chocolate that is slightly biscuity. Whisper of salted caramel. Mild and smooth oak barrel induced vanilla along with mild savoury vibe. A pleasing cognac like boozy richness but it's dark orange in character. Brighter orange liqueur. A touch of floral orange and some alcohol spice on the back end. Whew! This a very drinkable big barrell Impy that extracts every bit of goodness from the rare choice of barrell. Super duper.

Bottle picked up at the brewery. Not far off black. Barely a head. Nose has Jaffa Cakes. Soy. Liquorice. Rich cocoa heavy chocolate. Taste has a vanilla oak sweetness. Dark earthy cocoa bitterness. Vinous and a little dry. Fine carbonation. Drinks well at the ABV. Rich cocoa bitterness to finish. Errs toward savoury more than I’d prefer, but it’s overall a quality bev.

375ml bottle from Thornbridge Beer Club - Jet black body, lush tan head. Nose has a heady boozy liquorice feel to it, hints of roast coffee bean, with the orange sweetness coming through. Taste starts like a blackcurrant and liquorice boiled sweet, egged on by a big oily gobfull and a boozy orange hit at the end. Best I've had in a while, this. YEP!
