Old Embalmer Barleywine Ale has been a favorite since it was first brewed in 1999, and true to its name, is a great beer for the cellar. Brewed with copious amounts of malts, this year’s version features X-431 hops, a limited variety that lends tropical, dark red fruit and citrus qualities for brilliant balance and a velvety finish.

August 2014: 650 ml bottle, vintage 2013, yellow label and wax, Limited Edition No. 11. ABV is 10.2%. Featuring X-431 hops. At Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Amber colour, large head, slightly off-white. Strong sweetish aroma, notes of caramelized orange marmalade, notes of molasses and some fresh oranges too, hints of oak. Rich flavour, sweet and malty as expected, but not cloying or sickening. Citrus fruit and caramel again, with distinct bittering hops in the finish and aftertaste. Warming mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

Bomber from Albertsons. 2012 vintage. Aging had not gone well. Flat, mahogany pour, no head. Sweet, caramel aroma, a little off. Taste follows, going further downhill, medicinal, sweet, leathery, tobacco, dry. Sharp tang with no alcohol warmth. 2013 vintage comes in much better. Sweet, malty and strong. Heavy weight, warming.

27.12.2017, 0,65l bottle (2013 vintage) @ home:
Soft gusher. Big bubbly-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet sour-ish mineraly, weeds, grass, fruit stones, dried fruits, oak, minerals, dusty cellar, harsh citrus peel, bark, old dusty hops. Taste is slightly dry mineraly, weeds, minerals, grass, bark, fruit stones, harsh citrus peel, dusty cellar, dried fruits, alcohol, old dusty hops, hay. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and harsh mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough, too old I guess...

0.65l waxed bottle. Quite a cloudy looking one this. Really cloudy, deep orange or even amber in color. A good looking off-white head - really good for the genre. Like the aroma. Loaded with red berries. Red currant and lingonberries. Toffee sweetness, lots of malty caramel. Malt drops and red apple sweetness. Smells really nice and inviting. Tastes nice also, but it's surprisingly thin analyst light bodied for a 10 percenter. Lots of red berries here, toffee and red apples. Shocking lightdrinkable. Almost a little refreshing. Little alco warmth in the aftertaste. 14.04.2017

Sample from 2012 bottle during Blarney Wine Festival 2017 on 03/18/2017. The beer is a hazy dark copper-amber color with a medium thin light beige head that burns away steadily to a film. Stringy lacing. Aroma of malt, wood and citrus. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, oak, ripe fruit and a bit of grapefruity hops. The finish is boozy with a citrus and malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle, 2013 vintage (from Boxbeers). Pours amber with whiteish head. Aroma is sweet, caramelly, mashy, fruity. Flavor is sweet and bitter, caramel, fruits, malt, mash, citrus. Finish is sweet and bitter with some alcohol. Overall: good, but bit neutered (it is Widmer Brother’s beer) and underfermented.
