Oro de Calabaza is brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of strong golden ales. Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and beguiling influence of wild yeast. For our Grand Reserve Ron selected the following batches.
Batch # / Put in wood / Months in wood
157 7-29-13 21
212 9-23-13 19
293 12-23-13 16
295 12-26-13 16
327 2-4-14 15
That is an average of 17.5 months in oak before we bottled the final product back in May 2015. We then allowed this batch to bottle condition, tasting every few weeks, until Ron said it was time to let these birds soar! The result combines the taste of green papaya and the near rind edge of a fresh pineapple entwined with thin sliced orange peel. With each successive sip a light wash of Brettanomyces ties together with our classic Jolly funk like a bow, finishing slightly dry and refreshing.
This is a very limited release of one of our most acclaimed beers so don’t miss out! We look forward to see you Monday, February 29th!

The aromas have a lot going on with yeast, spice, citrus, funk, floral and some malt. Body is okay with great carbonation. Flavors are a lot like nose, bittersweet with just the right amount of tang and a touch of oak. Citrusy sweet tart yeasty finish. Good beer.

375ml bottle, 2016 bottling, pours an oily dark gold with a ring of head that faded fast. Nose is big sauternnes, sour orange, natural wine, sour barrel, some funk. Flavor has huge oak, natural wine, plenty of buttery Chardonnay now, green vanilla, tropical fruits now, but lots of sour orange. Full bodied, oily, buttery finish.

Bottle shared by Willrunforbeer. Aroma has the mild vinegar but thankfully not in the flavor. Brettanomyces, mild honey, with a mild lingering oak character. Respectable. Maybe because it wasn't held for 4 years rotting away in the cellar.

375mL bottle, capped. Dated 02/09/16 Blend 01. Slick looking beer, golden color. Aroma is herbal green sourness. Slightly sweet sourness. Flavor is similarly sweet, slick and sour. A little prickly, herbal sourness. Rather one note, JP has really fallen off even for a 2 year old beer I'd expect more.

At a tasting, many thanks, Hazy orange color with light yellow hues, aroma of over ripe oranges, plaster and apple vinegar, same traits in flavor with some almonds, light sourness, some tannins. Nice and interesting.

Bottle. Tastewise a bit rough with a high sourness level, harsh dryness and alcoholic notes. Mouthfeelwise very soft, in fact almost still.
