A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

Vom Fass (gebraut in Berlin) im Stone Brewing Berlin 2016-07 getrunken. Deutlich leichter zu trinken als die Variante mit Salbei (Sage). Auch die IPA-Noten sind weit im Hintergrund gerückt.

Can. Pours clear dark golden with small white head. Aroma is green malt, hops, soap, flowers, pine seeds, yeast and gooseberry. Taste is light sweet, medium bitter and faint acidic. Body is oily with light fizzy carbonation. Finish is long and dry with notes that follow the nose plus notes of dry Martini.

Canned 330ml. -Berlin version. Clear pale golden coloured, small white head, mild yeasty nose. Sweetish malty, yeasty, mild fruity hoppy and pleasant notes of coriander with touch of alcohol and spices in the finish. Not so intensive bitterness.

Can from Beer52. Gold with a white head and a pleasant frothy fizz. Smells of Belgian banana yeast and lemon. The banana yeast is to the fore in the flavour as well, with orange, grass, mint and spice too. It’s very dry and mildly bitter. I just don’t like that banana in an IPA; although I appreciate it’s well executed it’s really not my sort of beer and my least favourite of the 6 Stone beers that Beer52 sent me.
