Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a lambic beer, with very roast and very bitter flavours. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy.

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers. Big roasty coffee, roasted malt, cacao nib and baker’s chocolate everywhere. Lighter than I imagined on the palate. More roastiness, with some coffee and fainted charred wood. Cacao nib and toasted coffee on the finish. Nice enough, but maybe a touch too dry. --- Beer merged from original tick of Imperial Russian Stout on 30 Oct 2016 at 11:01 - Score: 7

2015 bottle (Wine Down, Carnegie). Dark brown, 1 cm light tan head. Aroma of brioche, mocha, caramel, anise. 7+ Silky body is perhaps a little lighter than expected. Sweet at first but leans towards dry at the end with firm bitterness. Mocha, dark berries, toasted caramel. Coriander? Not all that roasty. No overt alcohol, surprisingly. Pretty good, old fashioned. Will age well.

Bottle, 10% at KØ16. Fruity aroma. Black colour, seems hazy. No head to speak of. Salty and roasted flavour. Sort of fruity finish.

Bottle from BarleyWine. Bottle 1494 of the 2012 vintage. Pours dark brown with a sight beige or tan head. Aroma of mixed chocolate and licorice. Sweet and malty. Med body or so. Flavor is mixed licorice and chocolate. Some fruit notes - but not fresh. More dark or dried. Overall it has good flavor, but seems a bit thin and dry. But I’m not the czar, so I’ll say it’s a good drink.

Bottled 330ml. -at Le Šenk Bratislava. Black coloured, small beige head, coffee in the nose. Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, noticable alcohol and notes of licorice. Again chocolate and mild dried fruits in the finish. Really nice brew. Vintage 2015.

330 ml bottle, vintage 2012, bottle No. 1368, from Prima Beer, Hobro. 99 IBU as fresh. Ebony colour, low beige head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, vanilla, prunes, oak and fortified wine. Soft mouthfeel, very moderate carbonation. The flavour has the same notes as the aroma, also coffee and decent hops in the finish. Good beer.

2012 Vintage: 330ml bottle into a Westmalle chalice at home on 11th Dec 2015, most likely to finish the rating in the early hours of the 12th Dec 2015. Dark bodied with a wispy tan head, a mini-collar but not much else. The nose is awesome, prunes, dates, booze, Port, Sherry, Oak and goodness. The taste blew me away, all those aromas plus more booze and more booze blended with Oak and red berries soaked in alcohol pods (are there such things?). Did I mention booze yet? Just a fantastic brew: loved it. Goes really well with Chocolate Hobnobs!
