Generally only available bottle conditioned. Has appeared occasionally on cask. Previously brewed at 8.0%.
Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery’s 10th anniversary in 1990. The strength at 1080 og or 8% abv records our foundation in 1980. The style of the beer is very unusual - perhaps unique in being like a very sturdy India Pale Ale , but with ‘hop wine’ overtones.
The polished chestnut colour is generated solely by the strength as the beer’s foundation is based on premium quality pale ale malt. This matched by a generous measure of choice, full leaf-hops to counterbalance in the copper.
The result has been most satisfactory. The beer has attracted a loyal following, and has been selected by the head office of CAMRA to be presented to MEP’s in Brussels.

28/9/2018. Bottle from BEER:shop, St.Albans. Pours dark golden with a big foamy white head. Aroma of hops, malt, toffee, fruit and nutmeg. Towards heavy sweetness, light bitterness, and a very slight underlying sourness. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, average carbonation.

Fluffy off white head stayed on a still, tea coloured body.. Deep malty aroma with tea, jam & spice. Medium to full bodied, super smooth with a cloying aft. Sweet tastes of honey, over stewed fruit, grape & sherry. Good one

Bottle shared at Daniels place. 20/02/2016. From St Albans BEER fest. Hazed orange coloured pour with a lasting lively frothy white head. Aroma is toffee apple, alcohol. Flavour is composed of toffee apple, burnt sugar, lively, bitter apple. Palate is frothy, airy carbonation, tangy bitter woody finish. Decent.

Bottle shared in Richmond - many thanks to Fergus. Pours cloudy gold with a frothy, off-white head. Rich bread in the nose, so,e ripening citrus, dry toffee, crackers. Medium sweet flavor with some ripe tangerine, pale bread, lemon meringue, light pine, custard, vanilla frosting, medium bodied with lively carbonation. Sweet finish, lightly warming, with light bitter hay, orange rind, sugary pale bread, more custard, ripe citrus. Pretty tasty stuff.

(Gravity cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 23 Nov 2012) Chestnut colour with almost no head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of apple, caramel and vinous aromas of dry sherry. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, apple juice, dry sherry and a slight rancio character in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness and a generous bitterness with slightly leafy hops. Quite complex, but a really tasty barley wine. Nice one.
