Generally only available bottle conditioned. Has appeared occasionally on cask. Previously brewed at 8.0%.
Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery’s 10th anniversary in 1990. The strength at 1080 og or 8% abv records our foundation in 1980. The style of the beer is very unusual - perhaps unique in being like a very sturdy India Pale Ale , but with ‘hop wine’ overtones.
The polished chestnut colour is generated solely by the strength as the beer’s foundation is based on premium quality pale ale malt. This matched by a generous measure of choice, full leaf-hops to counterbalance in the copper.
The result has been most satisfactory. The beer has attracted a loyal following, and has been selected by the head office of CAMRA to be presented to MEP’s in Brussels.

Gravity Dispense at the White horse Parsons Green. It pours clear golden amber with no head. The nose is rather bland... syrupy sweet, honey and tinned fruit. The taste is rather sweet, raisin, golden syrup, wood, leaf and melon. Medium body, flat, syrupy and cloying. A challenge to drink.

Clear amber beer. A little light malt on the nose. Strong malt with a little toffee and a whisper of Port Wine in the mid. Trace of black tea before mild hops. Finishes soft and dry. This one needs to breathe to get the best out of it.

Bottle bought at St Albans beer festival 2011. An amber orange coloured pour with a huge off white head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Tastes sweet, dark fruit, caramel, rich, malty. Belgian styled barley wine. Pretty good.

330ml bottle, no.51825, picked up at The Real Ale in a Bottle Bar, GBBF 09. Stable, soapy white head. Slightly hazy, yet shining, golden-amber body. Rather faint aroma of herbal dried fruits. Tart citric fruits, malts and mild spices in a well balanced flavour. An integrate alcohol punch to a dry hopped ending. Likable, without being an exceptional barley wine (Tromsø, 02.02.2010).

[330ml bottle from Chiltern brewery shop] Pale amber-orange with a moderate foamy off-white head. Strong floral aroma and initial taste, lots of orange and lemon in there too. Syrupy mouthfeel gives the citrus flavour a cut mixed peel quality. Bitter, dry finsh, like an IPA. No discernable alcohol hit makes this quite a dangerous beer! Interesting flavour, I rather enjoyed this.

Medium dense yellowish head, slightly irregular, fed by fine carbonation in yellow to old gold coloured beer. Quite alcoholic nose, dry spices, (too) discreet. Very warming, mildly sweet alcoholic taste, foxesapostrophe garlic, mandarine peel; dry liqueurish character; softly mellowing warming up, begetting raisiny notes. Sharp alcoholic MF. Very slick, near creamy texture, well-bodied. Out-of-the-ordinary BW, but not one to be left alone. Even a bit Belgian in character, and that is a compliment in my book. Thanks, Darren!

Cloudy golden with medium white head. Sweet fruity aroma with toasted malt, caramel and hoppy notes. Flavor is sweet with caramel, toasted malt, fruity and hoppy notes. Ends bitter with warming alcohol notes. Ends bitter.

Bottle at home Christmas day 2007 ... Many thanks to Fin for this bottle... Golden amber ... overcarbonated foam head... light fruit hop nose ... again the over cabonation shows ... very lime citrus bit over ripe ... alcohol show a bit much ... quite drying hop ... i realy think this could have done with a few more years to remove the rough edges... a bit disapointing as barley wines go. This is interesting in that the beer gets better after sitting out for 30 mins or so
