Firsthand accounts describe an intense beast with a potent aroma and bite. Proof that the elusive monster exists? Or proof that brewing with five distinct varieties of hops creates an unbelievable, relentlessly hopped India Pale Ale? One taste and you’ll know, Swamp Ape is for real.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-caramel color with a huge creamy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sour, funky, tangy, earthy, piney, oddly vegetal and had a hint of tropical fruits. The flavor was very tangy and very sweet with notes of brown sugar, vegetal malts and tropical fruits. Long finish and full body. Odd.

From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear pale amber with an off white head. Herbal nose. Flavors of grassy hops and plenty of sweet malt. Bitter finish.

Not finding this nearly as bad as the ratings suggest, but then again I just got back from two weeks of Colombian beer. Pours pale yellow or orange with some lacing, no head. Aroma of pine and malt, some booze. Balance is decent as well, but overall this is light for style. Bitter finish. Tap at tap42. Hope I catch my connecting flight.

Very light haze on this gold beer. Little white head. Smooth softish palate, slightly syrupy. Sweet pale malt, creamy with mild caramel but it’s also slightly raw tasting. Strong piney hops with a trace of citrus. Smooth soft finish with mild bitter linger. A good beer undone by too much raw tasting pale malt.

Bottle. Tangerine and apricot aroma. Slightly hazy orange with a large ivory head. Cloyingly sweet apricot-ish malt and weedy bitter flavor. Way too sweet. Medium body, flat carbonation.

12 oz. bottle, bonus'd by LateStart (thanks Jordan), pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Nose is full of citrus hops and a bit dominating syrupy caramel malt backing. Flavour is very malty - there is a huge blast of citrusy hops at first, but then it transitions into disgustingly, cloyingly sweet, syrupy caramel malts. This is really gross actually. Couldn't take more than a few sips before drain-pouring this. Revolting.

12 oz. bottle thanks to my friend Ben for bringing this back from his business trip. Used an English pint glass. Color is clear yellow with thick lasting head from ample carbonation. Nice nose of a blend of hops with sweet malt. Taste is just ok. Big malt backbone with citrus and pine hops in the finish. Some citrus hops in the short abrupt finish. I pick up some of the ABV. It gets more distracting as it warms. Nothing wrong with this brew, maybe just average.

Better than the ratings led me to think it would be, a nice fresh floral and citrus hop nose and flavor. At 10%, the malts are strong and very sweet, sugary grains and caramel, which overall detracts. Kinda reminded me of 120 Minute-Lite.

Total Wine, Chantilly 12oz ($3ish): Pours a light orange with a white head. Aroma is a whole bunch of hops and a hint of a whole lot of booze. Taste is unbalanced. It is extremely bitter and hopforward (though certain beers like Palate Wrecker or Terrapin Hopzilla beat it by a long shot in that regard). However, the hops are not the problem. The problem is with everything else. The backbone is just unbalanced, the booze can be tasted, and the beer is somewhat of a muddled mess.
