Dark red, crimson colour. Aroma of cassis, red wine, very fruity. Flavour of cassis, quite astringent, pinot noir, reminding of a fruity bourgogne. Light astringent, light fruity finish. Very lovely, much better than anticipated (as I’m not the biggest fan of blackcurrants).

Bottle at Churchill’s, San Marcos. It pours deep purple, with a thin off-white head. The nose is chamomile, Granny Smith apple, raspberry, red grape, tart blackcurrant and lemon. The taste is tart raspberry, blackcurrant, red grape, grapefruit, grass, Granny Smith apple, lemon and lime, with a deliciously tart finish. Medium body and low carbonation. Utterly drinkable.

Picked this up at Hunger Mountain Co-Op for about $12. Poured into an Ommegang glass. The beer was taken right out of the fridge. I purchased it a month ago. Bottle says Lotnr. B whatever that means.

A - ZERO cork pop at all. This is a bit scary. I expected a cork pop and didn’t get one. Uh-Oh. Poured a beautiful ruby red / purple color. Exceptionally beautiful. The result is a nearly purple beer in the glass with minor black sediment flying around. The head was clear and about half a finger with extra large bubbles.

S - Extra tart / sweet lambic smell. The spontaneous fermenting yeast really flies out of the bottle even after opening just the cork. Lots of floral and earthy scent. The Blackcurrant scent is very strong and reminds me of a kid growing up with wild berries growing around.

T - Insanely bitter and almost spoiled. It’s not but the taste is very sour to the point of sour cheese or sour milk. It’s not very pleasant but it’s not terrible either as the beer continues to taste great after each sip but I get an old cheese taste with spoiled blueberries.

M - Zero carbonation on a mouth swish. Extra tart linger and an explosion of sour after swallowing. Light bodied.

O - I just don’t know how to place this. All of the aspects are there to make this great but maybe this 2008 bottled rare Hanssens that is very old and very rare has just been sitting around way too long and it’s fallen off. The bottle is new to me but it’s an old beer and possibly not kept well. The cork pop being the first sign followed by a solid black film of soot around the inside of the neck that has no smell or taste and followed then by the old cheese taste. Sigh. This beer had promise.

Where the Wild Beers Are, 2011. Typical of Hanssens, this beer is very sour. It is red in color, with a big barnyard aroma complimented by the fruit flavor. Palate is just a little heavier than most other Hanssens fruit lambics. It is very good, but I it is unlikely I will have it again at this price of $25 for 37cl.

i haven’t had a lot of lambics and don’t really no where to start so i picked up this bottle at beer store to give it a go. pours a flat rusty red, like a dull cranberry juice. Nose is nice of tart berries. tastes of sour berry. with some lemon and earth and tobacco. there is flavor but i have tough time with lack of carbonation and its a little too watery for me.

14/10/2011 37.5cl bottle @ John's place (2011-447)

Clear rust red brown to bordeaux beer, no head. Aroma: dusty, some disinfectant, attic, bit sour. MF: no carbon, light body, watery texture. Taste: vinous, slightly sour, sharp bitter dryness, bitter grape skin. Aftertaste: bitter grape pits and grape skin, some tobacco, still gives a watery impression. As we tasted this with other bottles from Hanssens, maybe our palate was influenced, but it was pretty hard to detect the fruitiness in this one.

Bottle, 375ml corked. A reddish orange beer, quite clear, and with a little rim of off-white bubbles for head. Sourish, vinegarish aroma with a good dash of berries, although more reminiscent of raspberries than black currants. Some cellar hints. The flavor is citrusy-sour, with berries dominating, finishing lemony and berry-sour. Dry, medium bodied and puckering. A quite lovely one, even for me who don’t care much for black currants. 110204

Small white head. Hazy deep purple body. Deep earthy funky blackberry aroma with barnyard notes. Dryish rounded deep earthy fruity taste is simple and short. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry raisiny watery port aftertaste with raisiny waxy notes. Loong aftertaste. Really unusual, and highly drinkable. (Taster at the brewery.)

/11/12/12//12
