A really good looking beer. That is also good. Complete black color with a nice lasting tan head. Solid lacing down the sides of the glass. Also a really pleasant aroma. Lots of coffee, some licorice and a fine pine touch. Ok intensity. Solid body and a fine smooth carbonation. Nice bitterness and semi dry texture. The flavor was not that typical black ipa. Where did all the good hops go. They are surely there, because it had a fine hoppy tail in the back of the mouth that came after a wile. The problem (when I wanted a black ipa) is that the beer is so coffee and quite strong licorice dominated. It complete hides all hoppy notes. They have to use a lot more hops in the next batch to call it an BIPA. Anyway it is a quite solid stout!

Bottle. A good looking beer, more or less black bodied, with a dense, two-finger dark beige on top. Curtains left as well. The aroma is a bit weak I think, and more on the porter/stout side, with roasted, almost bonfire-ish malts, licorice and some coffee, but there’s also some room for piney, resiny hops. Not much though, just a little hint. There’s more of the hops in the flavor, especially in the finish, but it’s still quite subdued considering the style. Roasted malts, licorice and a faint touch of bonfire and coffee, as well as some coffee-ish bitterness have some pine cones, resins and a fluor like hint as company. Lasting roasted, lightly sweet finish with a decent bitterness. Full body and a very smooth carbonation. Not much of a black IPA this one, but as a dark beer it’s rather pleasant. 160625
