Butcher's Tears in Aalsmeer, Noord-Holland, Netherlands 🇳🇱

Stout - White / Blond Regular
Score
6.70
ABV: 7.0% IBU: - Ticks: 11
Six types of speciality grain make up the grist of this refreshingly complex, oxymoron-defying Pale Stout. Contrary to common knowledge, stouts were not always necessarily black in colour and belonging to the family of porter. Grainiac has the fullness and bitter finish you expect from a stout while pouring a hazy, glowing orange colour that forgoes expectation.

Soft peach and apricot top notes give way to a delicate malt sweetness, followed by oats, rye and spelt along fruity esters and a velvet-like mouthfeel.

Brewed with barley malt, oat malt, rye malt, spelt malt, wheat malts and maize.
Extensively boiled to drive off any hop flavours distracting from your enjoyment.

Again kinda muddled. Cloudy, not super clean. Not stout-like at all. More of a slightly dank belgian pale. Butchers tears

Bottle. Color: Slightly hazy pale golden, white head. Aroma: Malty, subtle caramel, cocoa hints. Taste: Malt, grassy hopbitterness, herbal rye notes, grain notes, bit sugary, subtle caramel, somehow some roasted malt too and yeasty hints. Some floral notes towards the finish. Bittery and bit dry-ish finish. Quite dense mouthfeel. Just over medium body, just under average carbonation. Nice complexity and balance, very different from what I expected, in a positive way. Best 'Pale Stout' I've tasted so far.

On tap at Little Delirium. Hazy golden orange colour, dense off-white head. Aroma is fruity, ripe fruits, some melon, floral. Flavour of melon, ripe fruits, light earthy, a bit vegetal, hint of dirt, increasing herbal bitter finish. Light to medium bodied. Decent but far from the moniker stout.

Bottle @ home, about 8 months after bottling. Almost clear golden color. Aroma's of sour fruit or yoghurt from the glass. Retronasal it's totally different: light sweet, a bit herbal, some grain and bitterness, but also some fruit and of course the typical BT yeast. Flavor is moderate sweet with light but increasing bitterness. Medium bodied. Soft mouthfeel. Firm, somewhat herbal bitter finish. No idea why this should be called a stout, but it's nice anyway.

Takeaway bottle from Craft Theory Fest, Reading. Pungent aroma - a mix of citrus fruit, nougat, malts and basement. Cloudy pale gold. Medium creamy white head. Very light bitter with a citrus tang. Malts. Cream. Thick bodied. Gloopy. Average carbonation, verging on fizzy. Abrupt finish. I really like this - like a super heavy hefe. May not be to everyone's taste but for me it hits the mark. Just not too keen on the aroma.
