BRANDY EDITION

This year, the Grande Reserve fermented in Brandy barrels will surprise you with a rich combination of flavours. From the first sip, the aromas of ripe dried fruit, such as sultanas and dates, come to the fore, mixed with a subtle hint of caramel. The velvety texture of caramel and dried fruit blends with toasted hazelnut on the palate. The inclusion of tannins adds a pleasant structure, while the bitterness perfectly offsets the alcohol. The result lingers, encouraging you to prolong the tasting experience.

My bottle is in English (Grande Reserve Barrel Fermented) but I assume its the same beer. Kinda fun to have Chimay again for the first time in maybe 20 years! Also, nice they have something new out! This is very similar to how I remember the old bleu, except this has a lot more doughy apple character. Quite yeasty, semi-sweet malts with dark fruit flavors that are almost obscured by the peppery yeastiness and peppery carbonation. Is there a hint of phenol? No I think thats the oak - yep I'm really understanding it now, the oak really sits in the transient middle between the yeasty fizz at the start and the boozy and mildly bitter finish. Mild bitterness at finish works as a nice complement to the estery and yeasty profile. Nose is caramel, sourdough, barrel aged spirits and more oak. ABV starts to come through halfway through the bottle, as I can just feel the ethanol vapors across my palate and retronasally. Plus it doesn't take long to feel it either. Still pretty remarkably balanced for such a big beer. Cloudy brownish, large foamy head lasts the whole time with full lacing.

Bottle. Dark brown with lasting tan head. Vanilla, lots of brandy, plums, oak, marzipan, light earthy, dried apple, raisins, leather, strawberries. Quite sweet, medium bitter. O er medium bodied. Quite nice, I've not been too impressed by most of the beers in this series but this is rich and sweet which works well.

Bottle, 375ml corked. A big fluffy off-white to beige head forms over a dark brown body. Unclear, with some floaties. Bubbly lacing occur. The aroma is quite woody and spiced, with dark dried fruit, caramel, some dark berry hints and a touch of roasted malts. Alcohol and some booze. It's full-bodied, warming and generously carbonated, like it should be. Sweet, yet quite dry on the palate. There's a good dash of tannins too, from the oak I presume. Wood, spices, clove and cardamom springs to mind, prune, fig, chocolate, hints of berry acidity, some booze and a good dash of caramel in the flavor. All well integrated, like expected from a Chimay Grand Réserve. Lasting finish. Even though quite fresh, it's a very fine brew, showcasing both the base beer and the barrels used. Lovely. 241222

375 ml corked & caged bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 10.5%. Deep brown colour, large off-white head. Aroma of malts, brown kandij sugar syrup, dark dried fruits, oak and brandy, hints of mild spices. Flavour with the same elements. Good beer, but not the very best in the series.
