Barrel Aged Batch III 2017

For our third edition of the Barrel Aged Black Boar, I chose some very special 12-year Bourbon barrels, which complement the complex dark chocolate and rich coffee flavours of the Black Boar. Expect additional notes of warm vanilla, sweet honey, dark fruits, and lush American Oak.

A fierce and powerful creature was the Black Boar. This huge beast played a massive role in shaping ancient Irish history. Famously the Black Boar killed, and was killed by Diarmuid the warrior while he answered the challenge of his archrival Fionn Mac Cumhaill on the mountain of Ben Bulben in County Sligo. The Black Boar has come to represent resilience. Fitting then that this black, silky Imperial Stout should carry the name of one of ancient Ireland’s most notorious icons.

Description:
An intensely flavoured, big dark ale. Roasty and bittersweet, with a noticeable alcohol presence. Dark fruit flavours meld with roasted coffee and dark chocolate notes to create a very full-bodied, velvety, luscious texture.

Tasting Notes:
Rich and intensely complex flavours of dark chocolate, roasted malts, and robust coffee. Full bodied, with soft carbonation, finishing with a mellow alcohol warmth.

Ingredients:
Water, barley, hops, oatmeal & yeast.

Panda thanks to Cloin. Near clear dark brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Smooth and mildy dry palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts, touches of dark chocolate and dark malt cream. Very fruity but smooth whiskey, it's the real star of the show here. Whisper of something smoky. Light smooth finish. Wonderfully rich and smooth barrelling.

Bottle at home, from an online peddler whom I can't recall, 29/10/23. Black with a good sized khaki head that retains as a helter-skelter swirl. Nose is rich roast, bourbon stained oak, spice, dark malts, dried fruit rinds, cocoa powder, burnt toffee. Taste comprises dark malts, toffee, good bourbon rip, vanilla oak, spice, charr, cocoa sprinkle, vinous, fruit cake mix. Medium bodied with bite, fine massaging carbonation - top notch mouthfeel, semi drying close with a mellow kiss of alcohol. Solid well balanced sipper that has aged well at around 5 years old.

Nearly two years in the cellar. Virtually black with a creamy, beige head. Aroma of bourbon, balsamico and chocolate. Taste is bittersweet with a very nice finish that mixes bourbon with a restrained berry tartness. The weakness is the palate. The body is surprisingly delicate for a beer of this style and the carbonation barely counts as mild, giving the beer an overall flaccid feel—perhaps a touch too long in the cellar. Still pleasant sipping though.
