Rye Stout presents the earthy flavor of rye in a stout package. Roasted malts are definitely present, but the dark chocolate aspect is favored over coffee notes. Lighter than several in the Bell’s stout portfolio, Rye Stout remains a full-bodied beer.

12 oz bottle from mix a six purchased at Lukas in Kansas City Missouri. Batch 9370 printed on the label. Pour is hazed deep brown and ruby with nice settling building up a 2 inch khaki head. Head falls with loud crackling, and very large carbonation bubbles. Aroma is roasty, earthy maltiness and the rye - which presents as a very soft leafy, almost tobacco like smell. Nice soft and engaging nose. Taste is the roast malt up front, followed close behind by the earthy leafy straw of the rye, leading to a burnt, almost charred finish. Transitions of flavors are good, though the charred element seemed disjointed from the rest - ultimately did not detract from my enjoyment much. Palate is medium bodied, though certainly on the light side of medium. Carbonation is fairly low, and the body is a bit on the oily side. After the char calmed down on my taste buds, this was nicely easy to drink. Nice one.

Bottle: Poured a deep pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with light peat notes. Taste is very particular with some good peat notes and deep roasted malt. Body is quite full with a very nice creamy texture and good carbonation. Very singular since I am not used to rye being used in a stout but still very interesting.

Bottle: Very dark brown in color with a thin, creamy tan head. Aroma is a nice blend of roast and earthiness. Seemingly dry and reminds me of fresh wheat bread. Solid flavor profile is deep with roasted malts, toasted nuts, and a very light amount of bittersweet cocoa. Very well balanced. Different, but I was expecting something different too... Enjoyable for sure.

On tap at the Institute in Philly. Nearly opaque black with a white, wispy head. Aroma of burnt toast, nuts, coffee, some distinct spiciness too. Flavor is solid, milk chocolate, oatmeal, sweet. Full bodied, a little sticky. The rye adds some complexity that some other stouts don’t have.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown that is opaque around the edges and a thin brown head. Aroma has chocolate and caramel notes with a slight underlying dark bread (rye) note. Flavor is similar with a sweet beginning that is chocolate and caramel, but the rye grows towards the finish.
