Imperial Porter is a full bodied, very dark, malty beer with a good roasted character coming from the Crystal, Chocolate and Black Patent Malts used in the mash. Warrior, English Fuggles, and East Kent Goldings Hops balance the malts with a good hop bite. The beer has an OG of 1.070, rounding out after fermentation with just a slight residual sweetness and cutting dry at the finish. 7.1% alcohol by volume.

Smells alittle alcy, a lot sugary. Shit pours dark, some head that evaporates instantly and no lacing. Soft carbonation, uneven palate that works together like disjointed gears. Sour on follow through. My excitement over having an imperial porter appear in the lcbo is crushed.

Scarey looking label; signature porter and all. Twist off cap. Some metal in the aroma, no hint of the 7% volatility. Big black oily pour and the taste is big and bold with some choco in there perhaps. Not quite as rude as I was expecting, like big eddy, but it certainly is in the imp stout style. Whisky and beer thing happening here. Yes, does not even hide any of the 7% this is. I have to hand it to ya, there is some very mild cutting co2 in there. Long bitter burnt medicine with some remnents of stout there in the finish.

Rich tobacco, vanilla, and fig nose. Mahogany, thin tan head. A little drier than expected, but pleasant and appropriate.Vanilla is most prominent on the palate, only subtle hints. Finishes with a wisp of smoke. Alcohol blends in well, light to medium body. I’ve been quite impressed with what Shipyard has been doing lately.

RBESG Sheffield 2009 @ the Harlequin. Deep brown/black. small brown head. Roasted malt aroma, some chocolate, alcohol. Roasted malt taste, burnt sugar, bitter chocolate, a bit alcoholic, dry and bitter aftertaste. Not bad, I wish it was more balanced and less alcoholic.

Bottle @ home. Dark brown appearance with a tan head. Dark chocolate, dark caramel, mild licorice aroma. Kind of watery, caramel-chocolatey sweet, almost cloying, burnt flavor and not easy to drink.
