Sour ale with blueberries, bottle at Uncle Babe’s in Gent shared with Ster; apparently a collab with Hof ten Dormaal, though no mention of that seems to be made here in the information given above. Pale beige, lightly lacing head, dissolving in the middle but leaving a steady moussy rim around the edge; very dark burgundy-hued bronze robe. Aroma of spicy-and-sourish blueberries indeed, on top of an array of impressions; moldy hazelnut, passion fruit, red wine, butterscotch, sour cherries, balsamico, old dry sherry, pear peel, moldy acorns, hay. Lots of fruit tartness in the onset, actual blueberry juice mixed with impressions of pear and redcurrant, some very light banana sweetish echo hidden in the background, balsamic-like sourness but not too puckering, medium carbo. The sourness is beautifully softened not just by fruity flavors but also by a ’moelleux’, caramelly and bready malt sweet core deep in the bowels of this beer, providing a firm structure supporting the drying sourness. As with so many red wine BA beers, the tart, deep, coarsening red wine flavor shows up all the way at the back, after and in between lingering fruit acidity, remainders of the softish malt sweet backbone and some drying tannins. Very elegant, modern era American sour of profoundly Flemish signature; many ’oud bruin’ (Flemish sour ale) interpretations by present-day craft breweries lack a bit in balance, malt support and finesse, but this one has it all. Pleasantly surprised.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent, Belgie, Saturday 7th January 2017 sat in living room with Loz and Isobel. Pours dark brown in colour with some ruby red sparkles. Fruity, woody and tart with a shedload of bramble berry flavours. Really tangy and a good mouth awakener, dry finish. Good. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov16 3.6

Bottle @ LIBF’16. Shared with the RB Belgian team.

Deep red beer with a head for 2 full seconds. Vinous, red berries, fruitwine, chocolate, Be pralines with fruit-filling. Again very vinous in the mouth, red wine, fruit, quite tart finish. Dry, dry-out effect to some extent. Medium bodied, acidthinning notwithstanding. Very good, even if the wine dominates maybe a tad too much.
