Named after HMS Iron Duke which once served as the flagship of the Grand Fleet based in Scapa Flow. There’s six different hops in this beer giving an assertive bitterness. Try our double IPA version - called Iron Duke - for even more hoppiness.

Pale golden beer with the odd bubble and a decent foamy head. There’s a touch of bitter fruit in the aroma but it’s mostly caramel. The flavour is interestingly balanced. There’s a decent grapefruit-y, bitter fruit element but the malts aren’t blown out by it meaning there’s a balancing malty, biscuity touch. The aftertaste IS mostly the citrus but that’s no bad thing. It’s obvious that they’ve made an effort to balance this carefully and it’s worked. Very nice.

500ml bottle. Clear bright orangey golden colour, foamy white head leaving some lacing and aroma of lemon, grapefruit citrus, hop resin. Taste is biscuity malt with fruity peach, earthy citrus & pine bitterness. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry lingering woody bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green, 29/03/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose is pithy citric twinges, chalky minerals, peach, mandarin, straw, juicy hop ring. Taste comprises juicy hops, orange pith, mandarin, light pine, straw, mango, tangerine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, grassy hop bitterness drawing to a lightly drying conclusion. Solid hoppy cask offering.

Bottle at home. It pours crystal-clear gold with a medium off-white head. The nose is grapefruit, lemon rind, white grape, lightly herbal and biscuit . The taste is crisp, bitter, grapefruit, white grape skin, biscuit, pepper and some underling sweetness with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Perhaps a touch too much underlying biscuity sweetness, but solid stuff nonetheless.

Cask ale, beer flight choice at the Hanging Bat. Close to clear amber coloured body. No head, poor lacing. Malt-fruity nose, resinous hops and mid-sweet malts. Fruit caramel flavours, including peach, mango, and herbal hops. Bittersweet finish. Well bodied. Decent version of the style (Edinburgh 11.08.2013).

Cask at Cloisters. Pours clear golden yellow with a good long-lasting head. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, hints of bready malt. More citrus on the taste, but more subtle, with the malt backbone coming through. Very bitter finish, but a good cask beer.
