All the smooth, malty, chocolate flavour of traditional Scottish dark ale, but brewed to give a drier finish. The hops give a hint of orange. Lightly hopped for balance.

Bottle from the Highland Getaway, Kinlochleven. It pours dark brown with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, caramel, malt loaf, brown bread and cola. The taste is dry, bitter-sweet, caramel, dried fruit, brown bread, cola, earth, wood and fruit cake with a pretty dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty sweet and flat. Pretty bland gear. Forgettable.

Bottle from the Scottish Real Ale shop. Appearance - dark brown to black and opaque. Decent head. Nose - Highland Toffee and hazelnuts. Taste - more of the same. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish if a bit sweet. But hey that’s the style. Overall - even though the style has been nailed I’d have liked it to be a touch fresher at this abv.

Cask @ Castle Tavern, Inverness [270313]
Caramel brown, clear, thin bubbly head
Aroma - hint of caramel malt and a bit of roast
Taste as aroma, little flavour, just a touch of dark malt, dishwatery
Palate - Very thin, watery, very slight oily texture, but has almost no body
Overall - Well the pub served it far too warm, very dull flavour and thin - only drank 1/3 of my 1/2 pint and discarded it, poor

Bottle. It pours a clear, dark amber body and a small, light beige head. Toffee and butterscotch dominates the aroma, where there’s also some licorice and burnt hints. It’s more or less full-bodied, slightly sweetish and with a soft carbonation. Toffee, some burnt notes and licorice in the flavor, quite sweet, although it dries up a bit towards the end. Some bitterness towards the end. A decent one, but far from interesting. 121110
