Faint white grape aroma. Cola maroon, clear, thin head. Roasted malts, figs, grass, and candi sugar. Finishes with maraschino cherries. An undercurrent of rubber is present. Watery mouthfeel. Not particularly well done. Drinks like a homebrewer’s first attempt at an Abbey Dubbel.

22 oz. bottle, pours dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of molasses, dark fruits, burnt caramel, and wood. Flavour of roasted malts and burnt caramel malt upfront, with dark fruits, molasses and a woody and burnt finish. Very well-rounded and complex. Delicious.

Bottle. Black beer with a strong head. The aroma is roasted and gently sweetly spiced, the flavour is rich with a fairly deeply malty body and a vinous/rum finish. Overall a decent rich and vinous well fortified beer.

Tap at Rattle n Hum. Awesome, awesome beer. Pours a dark brown with almost purple highlights. A dense, beige head. Nose heavy on raisins and toffee, along with malty undertones. Flavor is super rich and sweet. More dark fruits. Some smoke and coffee in the latter stages of the flavor. Nice funky yeast hints as well, especially in the tail. Sweet and syrupy finish. Delicious.

Very good Belgian ale from a great West coast brewery. This beer pours a deep brown, only translucent at its edges, with very nice lacing. The aroma is rich and deep with good doughy malt character and lots of Belgian yeast. It reminds me a bit of Rochefort’s quad without quite the heat or extreme complexity. The flavor doesn’t quite live up to the nose. I’m not getting the sweetness that some people seem to report. It’s very yeasty with dark stone fruits and a strong caramel malt flavor. The finish lingers pleasantly. The feel is rich and full. Drinkability is good, but how could that not be the case with a good Belgian-style ale.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a large foamy beige head. The aroma is candied fruit, caramel, molasses and a light yeasty undertone. The flavor was nutty and malty with notes of caramel, candied fruit, a touch of molasses and a hint of spice. Faint alcohol shows through. The finish was long and the beer was fairly full bodied. Well done.

bottle, pours dark mahogany with a medium tan head. Brown sugar, raisin, and yeasty aroma. Flavors are nice with a carmel malt and brown sugar being upfront and some spicing and raisins in the background with some alcohol coming forward late with a sort of metalic sour note in the finish. Solid dark BSA.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Cloudy brown color; small head. Caramel aroma, it reminds me a Doppelbock, with a hint more of hops. Good body; it has a strong caramel flavor, some yeast, quite stong alcohol feeling. Quite good.
