This cider is a collaboration with; and tribute to the Best family who have been growing apples at Hicknowle in Dorset since 1923. Rupert Best made his mark on English cider and Matt & Frida Best continue his good work there today. This cider is classic in its ingredients (Brown’s, Yarlington Mill, Gilly and Fiona) with just a pinch of finesse, a bit like the Best’s themselves.

Unlike our other ciders, this one packs a big tannic punch which balances well with the rich, ripe apple flavours. Being aged in oak barrels prior to bottling provides complexity of flavour as does the autolysis character from lees ageing in bottle. This fine celebration cider has all the fine bubbled elegance of traditional method cider with the intensity you would expect from a traditional scrumpy cider. Our ‘Best’ cider to date, you decide...

Best enjoyed chilled in a flute glass.

750ml wired cork bottle from Darts Farm. Cage off and cork ejected itself, no spillage though. Pours pale yellow gold with huge dissipating opaque loose foamy head. Aroma: white grape, merest apple hints. Taste: firmly dry, light sharp, more white wine vibes. Medium body with spritzy carbonation. It's not cider, it's champagne.

750ml wired cork bottle from Aeble. Gusher on opening. Pale yellow gold colour, big foamy white head that dissipates to a thin layer and aroma of light apple, fruit, white wine & caramel hints. Taste is fleshy apple, fruity, white-wine, woody oak, with some drying acidity. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, dry finish. Quite drinkable.

75cl bottle from Sandford Orchards. Pours a deep gold with a lively effervescence. Aroma of schloer, sparkling wine, grape. Flavour profile veers away from cider and seems more in tune with a good cremant or champagne with little tannin or cider apple notes. Nicely sweet, flavoursome, high effervescence but not quite enough apple fruit coming through for a cider.
